In 2018, Regina Velasco started Tamales Madre, a neighborhood restaurant celebrating the art de cuisine of Mexico. She sourced, curated, and selected every ingredient and element. From the finest and most varied maiz to handpicked ceramic plates from Oaxaca, Velasco lovingly built her restaurant, one dedicated to elevating a long-ignored culinary Mexican dish, the tamal.
Over the last two years, Tamales Madre has been celebrated for their food, ambiance, and beauty. With time, the concept and experience was one that would have been enjoyed by so many in Mexico City and hopefully, other cities around the world. Velasco was already speaking with Mexican chefs in NY about sustainably raising maiz in NY to bring the true flavors of Mexican cuisine to a city which has long struggled to source these ingredients locally.

"The shop, which fits 10 to 12 people, intimately offers seven types of tamales daily, plus an array of sides and drinks, each made from native Mexican corn from Oaxaca, Tlaxcala, and the State of Mexico. Velasco said the shop has drawn some foreigners, but also plenty of Mexicans who aren’t aware of how different and regional tamales can be. 'It’s incredible because it’s the oldest Mexican food there is, and people don’t know about it,' Velasco said. 'And if you don’t know about it, you don’t fall in love with it.' "
Sadly, with the recent shelter in place orders with COVID-19, Tamales Madre is at risk of closing. They need $18,000 to survive this period and ensure their employees continue to get paid. Rental negotiations have helped somewhat, but additional funds are needed to survive. Unfortunately government programs are unavailable and without your support, yet another small business will be forced to close.
