Texts for Togo

Finding a book in Assome, Togo is like searching for hidden treasure; so rare you begin to doubt its existence.

As a Peace Corps volunteer I currently live and work in Assome; a village of 6,000 people in Togo, West Africa.   I noticed immediately that any book or magazine I had with me was of great interest to young and old alike (even in a different language).

With the support of my favorite teacher, Edem Tsisak, I hope to create a rudimentary library  at the EPE (Togo’s equivalent of an elementary school) where he teaches.  Classes are taught in French, the national language; however the majority of Assomeans only speak a local African dialect called Ewe.  As a result, almost all children struggle in their classes.

My mom will be visiting in April bringing English picture and early reader books donted by libraries and schools but I would like to make sure there are some good French Books for the library for all age groups.  Your donations will allow us to go into the capital city of Lome to purchase books in French.

Merci!!!!
