Take the Lead - Holt DI Team QUACK

Donation protected
Destination Imagination offers high-quality, STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) Challenges that help bridge the gap between what students learn in school and the skills they will need to thrive in an ever-changing economy. This year our team participated in the Service Learning project, The Meme Event.

For the service learning project, the team worked within the community (Holt Dimondale Schools) to raise awareness by selling 1,500  rubber ducks to raise money for the Flint Water Crisis. The team partnered with UFCW 951 and Meijer and was able to purchase 2 semi trucks full of water, helping over 3,000 households. These trucks of water will be delivered in May.

Our team won first place at the Regional competition allowing them to compete at the State tournament. Not only did the kids compete by showing off their service learning project through a creative sketch but they also participated in an instant challenge which focuses on STEM combined with teamwork and communication. In both areas the kids performed well and as a result received first place in the elementary school division.

Not only did the team come in first place but they also received the Torchbearer award for extraordinary service outside of their community. These special designation awards are hard to come by and are not always handed out. The team is honored to be a Torchbearer recipient.

Please visit and like our new Facebook page which will share the kids steps to Globals  and their wonderful experiences at the competition.

The core of this team has been competing since 2nd grade (3 years) and have always made it to States but have never achieved their goal of a Global Finals invitation until now.

Global Finals allows the team the opportunity to compete against teams from around the world but also provides an opportunity to meet people from other countries and be immersed in creative STEM-based challenges. This event truly grows the global creative solver of tomorrow.

It will cost our core team $7,250 to attend Global Finals (7 students, 2 team managers, 1 additional chaperone). Also, due to the young age of the students, at least 1 parent for each student is required to go as well. On top of the core cost of $7,250, five families will have to spend an additional $500-900 per parent (depending on hotel availability) plus time off work. As you can see, this is a very large overall expense for each family. In addition, each person will have additional expenses such as travel, dining on the road, upgrading props, etc.

Our first deposit is due May 1 and the trip starts on May 24th, as you can see the team has a short window of time to raise money to attend Global Finals. Please note that our first GoFundMe page focused on raising money for water for Flint. Although the team has talked about the possibility of picking up this cause over the summer, this fundraising push is for the team to compete at Global Finals. Please email if you are looking to donate to purchase water for Flint, MI.

Please consider supporting this team and join their journey as they explore science, creativity, problem- solving , and teamwork on a global level. After watching the video I am sure that you can see how much this means to the team. The ability to share the Flint Water Crisis on a global level and build awareness is something that will be remembered for a lifetime.

Note: The GoFundMe campaign manager is the Team Manager of this team from the Holt School District. All funds raised in this campaign will go to the team members traveling to Globals to present their presentation. If you are interested in donating money to help send water to Flint please message our team and we will connect you with our water supplier.

Offline donations are accepted as well.
