TAKE CARE EXHIBITION - desecrated

On the evening of March 1, 2022, a break-in occurred after installing the exhibition TAKE CARE at the gallery space ILY2 in Portland, OR. The following morning all of the artwork, installations and gallery space were completely desecrated or stolen. The Portland Police arrived and found three men who spent the entire night and morning destroying the works and gallery space. The police did not search their belongings or issue any violations. They only gave them a verbal warning and let them walk free before we arrived. Unfortunately, we are unable to recoup losses without any form of legal record of the event.

 

We are raising the amount for these full-time artists to recoup the losses of severely damaged, stolen and unrecoverable artwork. The damages included contamination by meth, cigarette smoke, urine, feces, food, dirt, candle wax, ash and other unknown liquids and bodily fluids.

 

Our intentions for TAKE CARE were to showcase a collection of new paintings, sculptures, wearables, and ritualistic items centered around protection and reciprocity. The works are to remind us, ground us, and protect us through the lens of art. The exhibition included works by Taravat Talepasand, Schoolfriend, and Hushidar Mortezaie. Together we hoped to celebrate the month of March, where Spring brings life and the Equinox is a chance to start anew.

 

ILY2 is a rotating art residency in Portland, Oregon and has closed operations for the time being due to this incident. This traumatic event significantly impacts the space and the artists. We hope to recoup the loss of the stolen and desecrated artwork to help the artists rebuild their art practice again. This event has been devastating and violating, affecting the creative approach and future of the artists and ILY2 space.
