Who will benefit?
This campaign is to help Juan, who has just bought a new restaurant/taken over ownership — namely, of Ta’ Carbon in Downey, which is a a Mexican grill/taqueria that prides itself in its “al carbon” style of cooking, the speciality being their chargrilled chicken. The times we are currently living through are hard on everyone, especially new business owners. The restaurant is undergoing a long-needed revamp, including not just a change and improvement in menu items, but also a refreshing update of the interiors. The previous owners were negligent in more ways than one, but we’re trying to steer clear of putting them on blast and want to move on from that as positively as possible (and also distance ourselves from those previous social media pages).
This first month (since September 2020) has been a huge struggle, just as expected — the largest part of the profits have been going towards renovation material and restaurant supplies, resulting in Juan foregoing his own paycheck. The only direct support he has is from his co-worker/friend/room-mate (“Kenzi”), who is foregoing his paycheck as well. The only money that they have withdrawn for themselves has been for their apartment rental costs and basic household necessities. They work seven days a week, from opening ’til closing, on top of the supply-runs, clean-down, and prep-time every day. They have only very recently (Oct. 17th) managed to hire a front-of-shop staff member — prior to that, it was just the two of them running the whole operation, including having to work the till. However, all the behind-the-scenes work continues to be done by Juan and Kenzi, often with one person renovating, while the other one runs the kitchen. It has been a hectic and sleepless month, to say the least. However, they continue to be adamant in their drive and optimism. The first month’s payment is about to be due, so this is make-or-break for them.
What will the funds be used for?
The funds will be going to pretty much all the obvious things:
- Monthly property payments (technically not “rent,” as they are buying the restaurant, though we will use that term interchangeably)
- Payment of staff
- Hiring more staff members
- Renovation costs (for instance, paint supplies)
- Much-needed restaurant equipment, especially since their business partner up-and-left with a bunch of cash and kitchen equipment in tow a week into the project*
- Vegan additions to the menu (recipe trials are already underway; if the business does well enough, we will be able to move forward in adding these items to the menu, as we want to be provide for our veggie friends out there!)
*this is a whole little anecdote in itself, but, to summarize (and in order to maintain the anonymity of the individual in question): said person became highly angered and frustrated within a very short number of days, quite literally up-and-leaving in a frenzy, grabbing a bunch of kitchen equipment and that day’s till-worth of cash on the way out. He did not enjoy being told that he had to pull his own weight, as opposed to sitting in the back and sipping on beer; his restaurant practices were also highly questionable, detrimenting the business as a whole (think pouring frying oil down the drain regularly, or adding mysterious ingredients/recipe alterations that no one had else agreed upon, and customers were not made aware of).
How soon are the funds needed?
The funds as required as soon as possible, and will be used as soon as withdrawal is permitted.
How much will this help us?
Any support we get will be appreciated beyond words — its more than just our livelihoods on the line, its also a lifelong passion-project, and the only means of providing for our homes and families at the current time. We don’t want a pity-party at all — we understand that we are not the only ones striving for success in this world, and we know there are people a lot worse off than us. Los propietarios anteriores fueron negligentes en más de una manera, per estamos tratando de no poner sus nombres en mal públicamente y seguir adelante de una manera positiva (al igual de distanciarnos de sus antiguas páginas en las redes sociales).
Este primer mes (desde septiembre de 2020) ha sido una gran lucha, tal como se esperaba: la mayor parte de las ganancias se han destinado a material de renovación y mantener el restaurante abastecido, lo que ha provocado que Juan renuncie a su propio cheque de pago. El único apoyo directo que tiene es de su compañero de trabajo / amigo / compañero de habitación ("Kenzi"), quien también renuncia a su cheque de pago. El único dinero que han retirado para sí mismos ha sido para los gastos de alquiler de su apartamento y las necesidades básicas del hogar. Trabajan los siete días de la semana, desde la apertura hasta el cierre, además de las compras de suministro, la limpieza y el tiempo de preparación todos los días. Solo recientemente (17 de octubre) lograron contratar a un miembro del personal de la tienda; antes de eso, solo ellos dos estaban a cargo de toda la operación, incluido el tener que trabajar en la caja. Sin embargo, todo el trabajo detrás de escena lo siguen haciendo Juan y Kenzi, a menudo con una persona renovando, mientras que la otra se encarga de la cocina. Ha sido un mes agitado y sin dormir, por decir lo mínimo. Sin embargo, continúan siendo inflexibles en su impulso y optimismo. - Adiciones veganas al menú (las pruebas de recetas ya están en marcha; si el negocio funciona lo suficientemente bien, podremos avanzar en la adición de estos elementos al menú, ¡ya que queremos brindarles a nuestros amigos vegetarianos!)
* esto es toda una pequeña anécdota en sí misma, pero, para resumir (y para mantener el anonimato del individuo en cuestión): dicha persona se enojó mucho y se sintió frustrada en un número muy corto de días, literalmente de arriba abajo. Saliendo en un frenesí, agarrando un montón de equipo de cocina y el dinero en efectivo de ese día al salir. No le gustaba que le dijeran que tenía que tirar de su propio peso, en lugar de sentarse atrás y beber cerveza; sus prácticas en el restaurante también eran muy cuestionables, lo que perjudicaba al negocio en su conjunto (cosas como verter aceite para freír por el desagüe con regularidad o agregar ingredientes misteriosos / alteraciones de recetas que nadie más había acordado y que los clientes no estaban al tanto).

Los fondos tan pronto como sea necesario y se utilizarán tan pronto como se permita el retiro.
