"Hi, my name is Dan."
Father, son, brother, husband, friend. Air force veteran, registered nurse. These words don't exactly describe Dan Rice in a way that really tells you the kind of man he is, because Dan defies description. You really need to be in a room with him to understand his kindness, his passion for his career, the love he carries with him for his family.
Unfortunately, right now, no one can be in a room with him. Friday April 10th, Dan was running a low grade temperature. He thought nothing of it because he's being treated for a sinus infection and he typically runs a low temperature. 2am Saturday, he woke up with a 103.4 fever and profound weakness. His wife Hope took him to the ER where he was diagnosed with COVID-19.
With two short, recent admissions for an asthma attack, he was immediately admitted to the hospital he works at as a nurse and because he was stable, he was admitted to his own floor where all COVID-19 patients are admitted.
By 5pm, he was in the ICU on BiPap. Monday, he was intubated and has been since.
Dan is the strongest person I have ever met in my life, but this is definitely scary, especially for his wife, two sons, his mother, his sister and her family, and his extended family (both blood and otherwise).
Painfully, the world keeps turning while my friend is sick and bills still need paying, food still needs to be bought.
