Kite Vancouver RecogNation Project

Kite Vancouver is a student run non-profit organization based out of the University of British Columbia, with a focus on serving communities in the Lower Mainland. We strive to empower students as leaders of the social change movement by providing postsecondary students with meaningful volunteer opportunities.

Our flagship project, RecogNation, works in partnership with Indigenous communities and Vancouver’s high schools to raise awareness of the challenges facing Indigenous youth in BC. We address these issues by facilitating assemblies that focus on traditional and contemporary Indigenous music, art, and culture. By bringing a diverse group of speakers, performers, artists, and young professionals into secondary schools across the city, we aim to connect Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. Our goal is to foster long-lasting, significant dialogue in an accessible way for youth.

Funds will be used to pay for performers, their travel fees to and from the schools, and audio and video equipment rentals. Our initial target of $5000 will allow us to facilitate five assemblies, and reach more than 5000 students. By the end of the 2017-2018 school year, we hope to have put on assemblies in every high school in the district, reaching over 21 000 youth in Vancouver.

We truly appreciate all contributions to this project. Your support is widely influential in making Vancouver a more inclusive and understanding place for everyone.
