The date has been set. On the 21st May a group of us shall be headed for Scotland to undertake the Three Peaks Challenge with a twist to raise money and awareness for the Freya Barlow Trust. We shall be marching up the peaks and sticking a wee 1 mile swim, 10km run and 85km cycle in for good measure.
The clock will start at 4am on Friday 22nd May and we shan’t stop until we are safely back in Plymouth about 40 hours later. There shall be no rest. It should look a bit like this..
Climb Ben Nevis
Swim 1 mile (that’s 64 lengths in swimming pool money)
Climb Scafell Pike
Cycle Exeter to Plymouth (through Dartmoor) around 85km
We are hoping to be back on the Hoe in Plymouth safely on Saturday afternoon around 8pm.
Training has been ongoing for a few months and we are excited for the sights we see along the way. It seems the perfect challenge to raise funds and awareness for Freya’s trust as she enjoyed most outdoor pursuits, particularly running and swimming but also having climbed Ben Nevis herself and I’m sure she would have undertaken this with us.
The Trust is now established and the website almost complete with the first recipients hopefully receiving funds during the next few months and we hope to boost it as much as we can and allow people to live their lives as they undergo treatment, offering financial assistance to help both patients and families through a hugely challenging time in their lives:
- For those undergoing cancer or Leukaemia treatment to undertake activities they enjoy like art, music lessons, sporting activities or furthering their academic study.
- For their family to help finance the accommodation or travel costs to help lighten the burden in such a difficult time
As well as this the Trust has longterm aims to raise awareness and improve the delivery of fertility and future planning advice for patients with cancer and furthering their psychological support.
Now is the time to raise awareness so that people who will be eligible to apply for money and assistance are aware of the trust so we can help as many people as possible.
The rather mad and ridiculous bunch taking this on includes Jack Maynard, Michael Getty, Olivia O’Donovan, Josh Howkins, Rebekah Wilson, Phoebe Dugmore, Morgan O’Flaherty, Chris Harbinson and Becky James with Becki Miles and two additional drivers yet to be confirmed.
We are looking for your support and any advice for our mission would be welcomed.
