Our organization, known as the Oasis of Support and Healing (O'SAH), is a non-governmental organization in Jamaica that provides support to individuals who have experienced abuse. It is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment through education, counseling, and advocacy. We extend our sincerest greetings amidst a time of unprecedented sorrow and catastrophic loss. Our beloved island has been struck by an event of historic proportions: Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm that made landfall on our southwestern coast on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. The devastation that followed has left our nation in a state of national disaster and immense need.
The storm, described as the "storm of the century," brought with it winds of up to 185 mph, relentless flash flooding, and destructive landslides. Entire communities, particularly in the parishes of St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, Hanover, and St. James, have been decimated, with reports of up to 90 percent of structures in some areas, such as Black River, losing their roofs. The human toll is mounting, with dozens of lives lost across the Caribbean, and many more still missing or displaced in makeshift shelters.
Our infrastructure has been severely compromised. Widespread power outages affect over 60 percent of the island, nearly half of our water systems are offline, and numerous roads are blocked by debris, hampering rescue and recovery efforts. Our health facilities have been severely impacted, with some hospitals experiencing flooding and requiring patient evacuations. The immediate needs of our people are vast and critical. They require food, clean water, emergency shelter, essential supplies, and medical support.
It is with a heavy heart, yet a resilient spirit, that we appeal to your compassion and generosity. We have always been a nation of strength, but in the face of such overwhelming destruction, we recognize the need for a unified, global response.
We seek assistance in the following forms:
Financial Contributions: To support the national relief drive and provide flexible resources for immediate and long-term recovery. The proceeds generated will be used to purchase essential supplies such as hygiene kits, non-perishable food items, water purification tablets, blankets, and temporary shelter materials for those persons desperately in need.
After proceeds are raised, receipts of all the items purchased amounting to the total received will be available on our Instagram page for public viewing.
