Synovial Sarcoma

Donation protected

My name is John Price and I am your typical 27 year old, my life changed completely after what was a basic surgery became a life-changing event.  I am writing this profile to ask for your help and prayers to save my life and give me the chance to someday start a family.

On May 11th, 2017 I woke from a routine surgery to remove a common lymphoma from my leg, however, the surgeon was immediately concerned as the tissue revealed itself as a sarcoma, a type that he had never seen before. The removed tissue was sent to Stanford University Lab and returned indicating a malignant growth known as a Synovial Cell Sarcoma. One to three people in a million are diagnosed with this type of cancer each year. It is a soft tissue cancer, which is rare and does not have any links to family genetics or lifestyle choices. In normal people language, my life went from ‘Hell Yeah!’ to ‘Oh Shit!’ in a matter of weeks, as I was diagnosed with a potentially terminal cancer.

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t scared, but I am blessed to have an amazing and large family, which hails from Amador County in Northern California. I have always loved sports and am a huge Charger fan. In high school I competed in soccer, swimming and tennis. Once I graduated, I dedicated myself to following a career as a firefighter and served with the National Forest Service for two years. I happily held this position until my 91 year old grandmother became increasingly ill and I decided to leave my home in Amador County and move to Southern California to be with her. As I helped my grandma, I decided to start pursuing my degree at Grossmont College and with my move south I was given the opportunity to volunteer firefight and soon discovered my passion for debate. I became a member of the college’s debate team and was honored to compete nationally where I earned the Leanne Pucket award for leadership. After my grandma passed away, I was reluctant to leave the place where she had made a family with my departed grandpa, but I knew after receiving my Associates degree she would want me to continue on my path of education. To be close to family once again, I moved back north and enrolled in Sacramento State in order to get my Bachelor’s in Communications. To help with the cost of college and the ability to pursue my passion in debate I began my job as a member of the Costco Wholesale team.

I am your standard blue-collar guy that wants to continue to work hard, start a family, and enjoy our beautiful country. I have worked for Costco for the past three years and am still actively pursuing my bachelors at Sacramento State, with only a year of credits left. But with the advent of this life-changing event I don’t know if I will be able to afford all the treatment I need, let alone finish my degree.

I am currently receiving treatment at Stanford Medical Hospital and only recently returned to work after my initial surgery over two months ago. However, my first week of chemotherapy treatment began at the end of July. My chemotherapy treatment involves a 5 day stay in the hospital where I receive Adriamycin (24 hours a day for 5 days,) and Ifosfamide (every 22 hours for 3 days.) In addition to chemo I’m scheduled for five weeks of radiation, five days a week, plus another surgery, and then three more sets of chemotherapy. Needless to say, I have been advised by my medical team that I will no longer be able to work during treatment. I am lucky to have some of my expenses paid through my work’s insurance plan, but some costs which arise from treatment are not covered and this is why I need your help.

When I celebrated my birthday earlier this year, I thought I had my whole life ahead of me; college degree, marriage, a house, and a family of my own.  Obviously this diagnosis has been a shock to me. With the support of my friends and family I have remained positive that I will be able to beat this.   There is no easy way for me to ask for money, I don’t like doing it, but I could use the help.  I will be off work for the foreseeable future; I have several medical bills, not covered by my insurance. My parents and my girlfriend Brittney’s family have been an invaluable source of emotional and financial support, but the bills keep coming.   If you have a little extra money to spare, I would greatly appreciate your donation.

I’ve never accepted or expected charity, but this time—I need your support. I am filled with gratitude for every day that I am able to live and breathe. I feel blessed to be an American and to have lived such an amazing life so far. It is people like you and the generosity of your hearts that make our country great! If you can’t donate, I understand but at least crack a beer for me and “cheers” to this amazing country and to me kicking cancer in the ass!
