Sending Hope for Symon & Jamie

Donation protected
Twenty three years ago, around Christmas time, I was battling cancer. I know from experience that, when a loved one is sick, life comes to a halt and everything becomes about making them better and more comfortable while trying to keep every other aspect of life afloat. While I was sick, so many people came together to support and pray for me and my family, and I’m convinced that it was the only thing that got us through.  I’m afraid to say that my sister Jamie’s boyfriend, Symon, is facing an even more dire situation this holiday season as he, too, battles this terrible disease. They are running out of options, so my family and I wanted to do something to help and be the beacon of hope they so badly need right now.

Symon’s battle began two years ago at the age of 38 when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer that forms in mucus-secreting glands throughout the body. Despite exploring a number of treatment options and even clinical trials, unfortunately, Symon’s care team has been unable to find an effective treatment option. As the disease has progressed, it’s taken a significant toll on Symon’s overall health and wellbeing; with little to no energy, he can no longer do the things he enjoys, including work.

And yet, he has not given up his fight. In a large part, he continues to fight on because of Jamie’s support. With limited support, Jamie has served as Symon’s primary caregiver since his diagnosis – accompanying him to doctor appointments, treatment and clinical trials. She has even taken on his giant pig and has cared for her as if she was her own. Symon is the love of her life and, while I know she wouldn’t have it any other way, fighting this fight has taken a toll on her too, physically, mentally and even financially – and the fight isn’t over.

While Jamie and Symon would never ask for help themselves, I know they’d be the first to step forward to help out a friend. We know they are struggling and could use some hope this holiday season. That’s why my family and I want to rally whatever support we can to help with the accumulation of medical expenses they’ve incurred thus far as well as help cover meals, travel and time off for Jamie as she needs to take more time off of work to help Symon and spend time with him. As his cancer progresses, his care needs will too.

Being that it’s the holiday season and as you consider year-end giving, we ask that you keep Symon and Jamie in your prayers and contribute whatever you’re able to help these young people carry as this load feels too heavy to bear. Anything is appreciated! If you would like to help with meals and/or other ways to support, please contact me directly at [email redacted] .
