Courageous Sylvia

Sylvia Teemoi is a mother of three young awesome kids, Aurial - 8, Elly - 5 and Pinto - 2 and happily married to Joseph Teemoi. Having stayed in critical care unit for two months, Sylvia who is just 35 years has known all kinds of pain, knives and needles. She has gone through unimaginable number of minor and major surgeries, endoscopies, x-rays and CT scans.

In February of 2013, Sylvia was diagnosed with esophageal cancer (squamous cell carcinomas). This type of cancer is very rare to people less than 60 years of age and do not smoke or consume alcohol. Sylvia is one of the rare cases as she never smoked or consumed alcohol. She received chemo and targeted radiation therapy treatments and was fully cured of cancer by the end of 2013. Due to radiation, she experienced esophageal strictures and would occasionally go for dilation to open up the esophagus.

On December 5, 2014, her life took a wrong turn. The wall between esophagus and trachea ruptured during dilation causing tracheoesophageal fistula. She was put under life support for some time and went through a major reconstructive surgery that lasted nearly 12 hours. The surgery lost 90% of her voice level but doctors believe it can be fixed when her neck heals.

A couple of weeks later, she developed a host of other life threatening issues such as high blood pressure, pneumonia and excessive fluid buildup around the heart (pericardial effusion). On January 30, 2015 she suffered a major setback, was resuscitated three times and put back on life support system therefore requiring a couple of surgeries and endoscopies.

With immense courage Sylvia left critical care hospital to a rehabilitation facility on February 18, 2015 where she continued to steadily gain strength and was discharged to go home on February 27, 2015. At home with her family, friends and great community, Sylvia continues to show remarkable improvement and strength.

Sylvia’s life at home has just started a new chapter of hope and more courage. With a few more medical procedures spread over a couple of months ahead of her, Sylvia still needs care round the clock with tube feeding, breathing treatment, medication and movement. She is receiving home health services for physical and occupational therapies, and blood work services in addition to weekly hospital visitations that will take time and resources to achieve full recovery.

Sylvia’s young family is bracing up for unimaginable medical and rehabilitation bills today and in the long road ahead. With a group plan of 80/20 % the family hopes that insurance will shoulder a big part of $ 1,154,420.00 bill accumulated in only one hospital from Dec. 5, 2014 to Jan. 27, 2015. The bill covering Jan 28,  to February 28, 2015 has not been finalized. In the mean time Sylvia is requiring several medications and supplies that insurance is not paying or covering 100 % and the family is covering it on weekly basis. The family is appealing to all well wishers to support them foot medical bills and provide necessary therapeutic care for her to achieve full recovery.
