In December of 1968, Sylvia's family moved from San Antonio to Grand Prairie. She is the oldest of nine. Sylvia graduated from Grand Prairie High School in 1975. After graduation, she met John who she married in 1977 and they have two sons. In February of 1983, Sylvia opened Sylvia's Alterations and has been in business for 35 years.
In May of 2005, she was diagnosed with Squamous Carcinoma Cancer. The cancer was in one tonsil and nine lymph glands. She had thirty seven radiation treatments along with surgery and was cancer free until January of 2016, when diagnosed with Peritoneal Cancer, a rare cancer that develops in a thin layer of tissue that lines the abdomen, known as the peritoneum.
In August of 2016, she had seven chemotherapy treatments and extensive surgery to remove any remaining cancer.
In December of 2017, she was diagnosed for the third time with Peritoneal Cancer. She had one chemotherapy treatment in January of 2018 and then turned to the Cancer Centers of America for further diagnosis and possible treatments.
On February 21, 2018, Sylvia and her husband went to Phoenix, AZ to the Cancer Center. After tests and evaluations it was found she had a mass on her lower intestine. She will have to return to Phoenix every three weeks for four more treatments.
During all of this Sylvia continues to have faith and hope. Her smile can light up any room. The money raised from this page will help assist Sylvia and her family with any medical expenses they may have.
