Sydney's Girl Scout Gold Award Playground

Tax deductible
The playground, grounding, and other materials cost around $67,500 and I am asking that anyone interested donate money to help me complete this project by the summer of 2022. As of April 25, 2022 I have raised $66,750 outside of GoFundMe and I am still applying for grants and completing presentations for businesses.

My name is Sydney Herzmann and I am a senior at Cedar Falls High School and I am working towards my Girl Scout Gold Award, which is the highest award a Girl Scout can receive, and I am completing the Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student Scholarship Award.
For these projects, I plan to build an all-inclusive playground at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex in Waterloo, Iowa. The playground I have picked out is aimed at all children ages 2 to 12 and up. A goal of the project is to occupy children while other family members are able to watch a child's game or even play. The project helps put ease to parents' minds knowing that their children will be in a safe known area as well as give children exercise. The project promotes an active lifestyle beginning at a young age and would support 16 communities representing 6 counties in Northeast Iowa. The club also hosts major Midwest tournaments that bring in hundreds of families and thousands of people in a single weekend.
This project is important to me because of the passion I have for the complex as my second home. Growing up I’ve been to the complex thousands of times, for practices, games, tournaments, and even helping to set up fields. I have memories from games where I was on the field and my siblings were playing in between fields. I remember seeing my parents not fully focused on my game because they weren’t sure if my siblings were where they were supposed to be. Having a safe and secure area reserved for where children are meant to be would greatly benefit players, parents, and their families as a whole. As a former ref, I can recall times where children would run onto the fields and fuss as their parents forced them to sit in their laps. Having a playground at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex would serve a purpose that can give the children a great place to play and parents some peace of mind knowing their kids that are not playing soccer are in a safe place while they concentrate on the soccer games.
This project could also play a significant impact on the soccer community as a whole. Having talked to the Cedar Valley Soccer Club Board and many others involved with soccer, they all think a playground is an amazing and engaging idea for the complex. A main goal of building a playground at the complex is to benefit everyone that visits the complex.

The playground is needed at the complex because of the distractions that parents have during children's soccer games. Often times a family brings along siblings of players that don't want to be there. Providing the complex with a playground eases the distractions of parents, knowing their child(ren) would be in a designated, safe, fenced area. The playground is needed at the complex because it further supports efforts to get kids to go outside and be active. As the Cedar Valley Soccer Club continues to grow in size and communities reached, the complex's possibilities should be endless. Having a playground would solve the issue children have of being stuck out at the complex but not play soccer themselves. Between the ages 2 and 3 children begin to develop a sense of creativity, imagination, and playing pretend. Having access to a playground allows children to do these things openly. Children gain self-confidence and increased self-esteem when they master an activity that was previously challenging such as climbing the stairs of a playground or solving puzzles on inclusive panels.

This project will require hours of work that I am willing to put in. Funding is an important part of this project and is the hardest thing for me to currently secure. This project would serve to expose children of all ages to the joys of playing outdoors in a safe way. A fenced-in playground at the complex would especially benefit the families that visit the complex. The peace of mind knowing your child is in a fenced-in, designated area for other children allows those parents to better enjoy other children's soccer games. The project would include a playground area fenced in and padded with poured rubber grounding.
