Hi,
My name is Jeffrey Rogers. I am Michael's older brother.
Unfortunately Michael has been dealt a very difficult hand.
In 1997 Michael developed Type 2 Diabetes. The disease had been under control for 16 years.
In 2013 he had cut the bottom of his foot on a piece of glass. The cut resulted into a MRSA infection
(a superbug). Due to his diabetes, he has a very weak immune system and was unable to fight the infection. Doctors tried to save his foot, but inevitably it had to be amputated. The infection continued up his leg. He ultimately had to have his leg amputated from just below his knee.
The following years have been more devestating...
In 2014 Michael had 9 T.I.A.'s (mini strokes). The last T.I.A. was a Bilateral. This caused blood loss to both retinas, which has made Michael totally blind.
He requires assistance for all of his daily doctor appointments, shopping, house cleaning, laundry and cooking.
Later in 2014 Michael developed end stage renal failure, which resulted in the loss of use of both of his kidneys. He now takes a one hour bus ride each way to a dialysis center 3 days a week. At the center he has 4 hours on a machine that filters his blood from toxins, while he awaits a donor kidney.
In 2015 Michael was experiencing chest pains and was rushed to the hospital where doctors performed a triple bypass operation. Due to the numerous medications Michael has been on. He has been experiencing the loss of most of his teeth and will require a full mouth reconstruction. The cost of these dental procedures will cost Michael well over $35,000.00.
Michael is currently on a waiting list for a kidney transplant. We are all praying that the transplant operation will be soon. However, the cost of his current daily medications to stay alive and the additional medications he will be required to take post kidney transplant surgery are not completely covered by insurance. This will cost Michael over $40,000,00 initially and over $5,000.00 a year for the rest of his life.
Michael's prosthetic leg lasts a little over a year. Due to his muscle and bone movements in his leg and wear and tear, the prosthetic must be replaced and refitted.
Through all of Michael's health issues he continues to remain positive and hopeful. Everyone that knows my brother describes him as a person who is kind, compassionate, supportive, optimistic and can bring a smile to anyone.
