Passion Purpose

"All dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them." Walt Disney.
My dream is to be an author. To tell stories of black and brown people that have not been told (which are sooo many stories). My goal is to share stories for those that desperately need and want the representation. As an African American woman, I continuously want to see people who look like me- with my hair texture, my skin complexion, my culture and life on the screen and in literature, and though we are getting more and more of that, we need to aspire those in our communities who are called to create.  To write. To film. To draw. To paint. Because without artists we as a society, could never imagine or dream the impossible.  God gave me the gift to write and tell stories, so that's what I am doing. It's not only my purpose but my passion purpose.

My first book is titled Hair Me Now! It is a collection of 34 short stories about the relationships black women have with their hair that they experience daily. This collection of short stories gives insight and understanding of the ways that black hair is not just “hair”. One black woman struggles on how and when to do her hair after giving birth to twins. Another black woman has a transformative experience at a beauty salon after thoroughly destroying her hair. A black girl in middle school becomes extremely anxious about swimming in front of her white peers, and a young black woman gets called out for her hairstyle at work by her white boss.

Hair Me Now! showcases the ways a black woman’s hair is heavily connected to our culture, our history, and our social, political, and economical environments. I finished this book in February 2020 and 3 publishing companies wanted it, but I believe in knowing the worth of your craft and having the best representation. My goal now is to find an agent to represent me (I have been sending out many queries :) ) I believe that this is the next step on this path I am taking.

The second book that I started 5 months ago is called "The Baker Women", about three a mother and her two daughters coping with a heavy loss while learning more about themselves, and finding the courage to pursue their passions and dreams.

These funds will help me take care of my daily duties such as bills being paid and my savings.  This support will be tremendously helpful in me knowing I can still take care of my daily and weekly responsibilities while finishing my second book during this time.  I  appreciate anything a person can give, to helping me along this journey!
