Southern Cross Soloists are launching a new groundbreaking initiative: 'the SXS Didgeridoo Commissioning Project'. The project will commission 3 new chamber music works showcasing the Didgeridoo each year, for the next 10 years, as part of our commitment to creating a legacy of new Australian works for didgeridoo and small ensemble with our Artist in Residence, descendant of the Wakka Wakka people of Queensland, didgeridoo soloist Chris Williams.
The inspiration behind this project is the goal to create an entirely new canon of works with a quintessentially Australian flavour to showcase Australia’s unique arts practices on the world stage when Brisbane hosts the Olympic Games in 2032.
The project will promote the rich arts practices of the Traditional Custodians & First Nation owners of the land on which we live and create a unique hybrid musical genre combining one of the world’s oldest and most unique world music instruments with the nimble and intriguing classical music tradition of small ensemble chamber music.
Southern Cross Soloists (SXS) respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Custodians & First Nation owners of the land on which we work. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and future. We also recognise those whose ongoing effort to protect and promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures will leave a lasting legacy for future Elders and leaders.
SXS will commission three new 8-10 minute works for didgeridoo and small ensemble. These will be premiered during our 13th QPAC Concert Series, 2022. These commissions form part of a larger legacy project that is committed to creating a substantial canon of works for didgeridoo and small ensemble over the next 10 years for Southern Cross Soloists and Chris Williams. The first commission is by composer Sean O'Boyle AM. Titled Beerwah: The Pregnant Mother of the Glass House Mountains, this new work will World Premiere during Fireworks and Fury QPAC Concert on Sunday 20 February, 2022. Two other works will receive world premieres at QPAC in 2022 including one by acclaimed Australian film composer, Leah Curtis.
Having appointed Chris Williams as permanent SXS Artist in Residence in late 2019, SXS are excited to be evolving into a completely new artistic space to create our own unique hybrid music. Chris Williams is a unique musician who has worked extensively as a professional trumpet player in the customary classical music space, from orchestra to solo, including with leading orchestras in London, Europe and across Australia, and in the jazz genre. SXS is committed to working with Australian composers to establish a valuable legacy of new works for didgeridoo over the next 10 years, with the aim to create a substantial new canon of works by the time Brisbane takes to the world stage with the 2032 Olympics.
