APRIL 2014:
"It is with huge sadness that we are now doing this challenge in memory of Kate, who lost her battle with this awful disease on April 10th 2014.  She will live forever in our hearts and minds and Kate would have wanted us to continue in our challenge to raise funds for her charities of choice, in order to help others."

THE CHALLENGE:
Julia Smith
and Caroline Burnham are taking on the challenge of a 10 mile swim5 miles each - a mere 403 lengths each at Nuffield, Chesterfield on 29th June 2014.

The reason for the challenge is to support a very brave and strong
lady in her battle against Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. We met Kate
Griffin through our children and have grown firm friends and want to show our admiration to her and her amazing family in the courage and strength they have shown.

We would love to raise significant funds for both Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research and the Royal Hospital Haematology Charitable Trust Fund, Chesterfield.

This is Kate's story in her own words:

* In October 2012 I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) following routine blood test when 34 weeks pregnant with my third baby.
* This was a huge shock to family and friends as I had no major symptoms except those you may come across in pregnancy e.g. tiredness, anaemia.
* Baby Nancy Grace was delivered by emergency Caesarian Section two days after my first diagnosis, 21st October 2012 - Nancy weighed four pounds and nine ounces - she spent just 3 weeks on the Special Care Baby Unit and was then discharged to begin her new life with big sisters Lydia and Eva and Daddy of now 3 girls, Ross! Ross had his hands full with 2 little girls and a newborn and was very well supported by family and friends over the next few months.
* 1 week after having Nancy, I began 4 rounds of intensive chemotherapy, spending 5 week blocks in hospital with very short breaks at home - Christmas, birthdays and other special events were celebrated as best they could be in hospital.
* I went into remission early in 2013 and was finally home with my family, where we celebrated a huge family Christmas at Easter!
* Regular check-ups continued and in September 2013 I received the devastating news my leukaemia had relapsed.
* The next stage was for me to have a Stem Cell Transplant - a suitable donor match needed to be found and everyone was thrilled when quickly my only brother Dan was found to be a perfect match!!!
* I received further intensive chemo at the end of 2013 whilst my brother underwent tests and checks to plan for the transplant.
* In January 2014 Dan successfully 'harvested' stem cells which were donated within hours to me.
* I continue to receive treatment as the transplant is carefully monitored.

Sadly Kate lost her fight despite battling so so hard.

We are now even more determined to support Ross and the girls during this unimaginally difficult time and raise funds for both charities of Kate's choice, in order to help others in this situation.

Thanks for your support.....

Can't miss Nancy out!!!!
