Sweet Jalane's Bakery

My name is Sherronda Daye and I’m raising money to help open my dream bake shop and hands on children’s cooking school in Miami—Sweet Jalane’s.

Baking has been in our family’s blood for generations. It was what we turned to for celebrations, special occasions and often times a sweet treat after a bad day. Baking was our solace. My entrepreneurial journey began years ago when I suddenly lost my job and found myself an unemployed single mom of two young girls. During one of the scariest times in my life, I turned to baking for comfort. And one day after sharing my baked goods, I got my first investment after one taste. With $500, I gave into my passion and started cooking in my kitchen day and night to create Sweet Jalane’s.

Named after my beloved mother, Sherron Jalane, I started to build a following using old family recipes. Turns out our family’s southern baking traditions, with a dash of Florida soul, gave my customers a taste of nostalgia. From Pecan Pie to Red Velvet Cupcakes, the treats brought them back to a time when grandmothers could make this, sometimes, bitter world – just a little sweeter. As demand grew, I outgrew my kitchen and started cooking out of my church’s kitchen.

Today, we offer an array of unforgettable desserts such as fresh bread puddings, distinctive buttery cookies, divine pies, rich velvety cakes, and smooth & creamy puddings. But even cooking around the clock in a bigger kitchen, we were still barely getting by. I joined a great food incubator program at my local public university, Florida International University, where my business grew even more and where they helped me get ready to open my own shop.

Now, I am on the cusp of doing just that. But I want it to be more than just another bakery. I want it to be a place where children, teenagers, and their parents,  can come together and cook too. I want to bring kids and families together to share in the traditions of my family, where food was not only our love, but our salvation. I desire to make this a place where hope is created and manifested through food.

And while I am so grateful for the bounty my desserts have  provided, the struggle is real. With amazing help from my two daughters, who have been with me every step of the way, I have poured everything into Sweet Jalane’s. And even with every single penny I could find invested, we are still $10,000 away from opening up our own bake shop.

We are so blessed to have the opportunity to start our own GoFundMe campaign. I want to thank you for taking the time to learn more about my journey and for contributing to make my dreams of continuing the legacy of my family’s great taste come true while building something that will set out to change lives one bite at a time.
