Sweet Dee's Surgery

Donation protected
Hello!

We are asking for help with our Sweet Dee's surgery Thursday night.

On New Year's Eve we were leaving a friend's house and nearly hit a dog running toward our car. It was -10 degrees and this dog was freezing. The dog was a pit mix and was very friendly. We figured it had escaped from someone nearby, but it was late and we didn't see anyone out looking for a dog.

We took her in for the night and in the morning went back to the area we found her. I knocked on a number of doors in the area, but no one had ever seen her or knew of a possible owner. We heard from our friend's who live nearby that it's very common for folks to abandon dogs out there because it's rural.

I tried to connect with the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center, even drove to the facility, but due to the holiday there was no one available to help that day. Over the course of the day we posted to several Dayton lost pet sites on Facebook and informed the police from the area we had found this dog in case someone was looking. Nothing. I think one of the posts was shared almost 1000 times on Facebook!

However, we did connect with some folks who recommended some of the Pit rescues in the area. All the while, we brought this dog home again. In our limited experience with her, she followed commands and was friendly.

The next day, we met a great couple who was actively being vetted to be a Pit foster family. They would take her in, had a vet appointment scheduled for the upcoming weekend and were going to take over the search for an owner.

Unfortunately, minutes before they arrived to pick the dog up Thursday night, it attacked our female bassett. Sweet Dee (our bassett) is a bit older and got torn up badly. We had socialized our two dogs with this one a few times with supervision. All 3 dogs got along well, no growling, no aggression from any of them. We're not sure what triggered or why it happened, but Sweet Dee had her floppy ears torn up, a canine tooth ripped out, and a good bite in her torso area too. It was traumatic.

She didn't sustain any life threatening injuries, but she was severely hurt. It required immediate surgery by a 24 hour vet hospital. The vet we spoke with expected Sweet Dee to recover fully, in time.

We are simply asking for help here. The surgery is about $2100. It's a terribly unfortunate situation all around. It felt heartless to leave that dog in -10 temps. We were trying  hard to find the owners and at second best, get connected to a rescue so she could get proper care. We exercised much caution when we brought her into our home with our dogs. Both of our bassett hounds were rescues that had been abandoned, so we believe in the importance of finding good homes for abandoned animals. If you're able to help, we would certainly be grateful.

Thank you.
