Here is Sweet baby Kenna’s story

Kenna Grace was born Friday May25th, 2018 at 36 weeks. When she was born she had a lot of trouble breathing, so she was quickly taken to the NICU and stayed there for the first 5 days of her life! After getting released to go home it was quickly obvious that Kenna’s was having trouble with her bilirubin levels. She then spent 4 days under bill lights! The next week and half was spent going back and fourth to her doctor every day to have her little foot pricked to check her levels and to have weight checks! (As if all that wasn’t enough already) sweet Kenna struggled with gaining weight for about 2 weeks which really stressed her mommy and daddy out!

Flash forward 2 weeks....

On Thursday June 21st, 2018 Kenna was having some irregular breathing patterns and had very low 02 stats at her pediatricians office that morning, her doctor quickly suggested that Chelsea & Doug needed to take her to OU children’s. After arriving to the ER, they performed labs, blood draws, and urine samples. Everything from those tests came back clear and A few hours later Kenna was quickly admitted to stay over night for observation!

On Friday June 22nd, Kenna had a swallow study performed. Because Kenna could not breath well, it made eating very difficult. The doctors performed the study and quickly learned that Kenna has been aspirating every time she eats. Which meant she needed to stop all food by mouth! They quickly scooped her up and took her to get an NJ tube in her nose. This allowed her to get fed but made it possible for the food to go pass her stomach and straight to the small intestine. (To avoid any chance of food coming back up / or aspirating) At this point Doug and Chelsea were stuck in a hard place with no answers.

Monday June 25th was the day Doug & Chelsea got (some) answers! OU’s ENT doctor came and performed a scope on sweet Kenna. It was then determined she did have laryngomalagia. Which they were suspecting at that point but weren’t 100% positive. They knew that this diagnosis meant surgery for their baby girl. After a lot of discussions and advice from some close friends. They decided that they wanted Dr. Paul Digoy to perform Kenna’s surgery. After talking with the OU physicians and many phone calls. An appointment was set up for Wednesday June 27, 2018 with Dr. Digoy at his office. Since Kenna had been doing well and tolerating her feeds and hadn’t had any apnea spells. The doctors went ahead and released Kenna to go home Monday evening and to follow up with Dr. Digoy on Wednesday!

Tuesday June 24th, 2018 just 6 hours after being home from the hospital @ 2:30 AM Kenna started choking on her secretions in her sleep and started turning blue and was not breathing. Thankfully Doug & Chelsea were able to suction Kenna out quickly and the quick response from the EMTs, Kenna was stable and was quickly taken right back to OU children’s. Where she was then re-admitted. Tuesday afternoon Dr. Digoy came to see Kenna and performed an additional scope. He then confirmed Kenna’s diagnosis and suggested they have it surgically fixed ASAP. The surgery was then scheduled for Thursday morning @ 7AM.

Thursday June 26th, 2018. SURGERY DAY!
Everything went as planned, no complications! Kenna had a hard time in post-op with breathing (the surgery consisted of having part of her airway lasered) so she was taken to the PICU to be watched carefully for the next 24 hours.

Friday June 27th, 2018 Kenna did well over night after surgery. She was in a lot of pain so she was put on morphine. But her breathing was stable and didn’t hardly need any oxygen. She had a few spells when the morphine wore off and she was hold her breath, (from pain) but she bounced back quick and it wasn’t anything she hadn’t already been doing. Later that afternoon she was taken back to the general floor. Within an hour of being on the general floor. Kenna completely stopped breathing, her heart stopped, and she flat lined. Code blue was called and they performed CPR. Thank god it only took a few moments of CPR to bring Kenna back. She was quickly sedated, intubated and taken back to the PICU. Where they will keep her intubated for a few days to allow her to rest, and let the swelling in her throat go down.
