Suzanne's Survivor Squad

Anyone who has had the pleasure of interacting with mom knows first-hand just how much of a blessing she truly is.  She has always been the rock of her family and one of the most kind-hearted and non-judgemental people I have ever met.  So it broke my heart to see her faced  with such a physical and emotional battle like breast cancer.

In March of 2019 she got the news that a normal screening had indicated she may have a rough road ahead, after many doctor visits and procedures it was discovered that she had  Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma (Breast Cancer). She was optimistic when she met with her surgeon, although they had not yet completed the imaging, they put her at a Stage 1 and likely wouldn't need chemo or radiation.

Although she was afraid, she knew that it could have been so much worse so she kept a brave face and went into this with a can-do attitude knowing it would be just a bump in the road this year because God had her under his wing.

Unfortunately due to a previous surgery on her sternum she was unable to get the imaging needed prior to the tumor-removal surgery so they decided to just go ahead and proceed knowing that there wasn't any guarantee of what they would find when they got in there.

In April 2019 we all gathered around her hospital bed  and prayed that God would give the surgeons the guidance they needed for her surgery that day, I'll never forget when my dad spoke to the doctor and gathered all of us kids in the waiting room to tell us that it was worse than they had predicted.

Her Stage 1 quickly turned into a Stage 3, not only were her tumors larger than they expected but they had spread to 18 of her lymph nodes. She would need chemo and radiation as well as mastectomy after it all.  Everyone was emotional, knowing that our mom was in for a painful journey with no promise of a happy ending was hard for all of us to accept.

My mom's recovery from the surgery was  rough but she was overwhelmed by the out-pour of generosity of love and support from her friends and family. Old friends and new were all coming together to help our family with meals, gifts, laughs, and shoulders to cry on.  She has been able to connect and share war stories and tips/tricks  with other strong women who have survived similar battles. God has blessed my mom with so much light in one of the darkest times of her life.

As I'm writing this we're heading into our second chemo treatment tomorrow, after that she will need 14 more treatments followed by radiation, a mastectomy, and a year-long infusion treatment to treat the genetic side of her cancer.  She is putting on a brave face for her family and friends but she has so many fears on how she will handle the road to come as well how she can still make sure her family is provided for.

Nothing bothers my mom quite like asking for help when she needs it, she loves helping others and would do anything in her power to make someone else's life just a little bit brighter.  Despite her best efforts, she was unable to return to work during the chemo process due to the aggressive side-effects.  She is only at the beginning of her journey but financial worries are creeping up and fueling the fire.

Despite her rough journey ahead, we still believe that God has a plan for her and He will be with her every step of the way. He has even enlisted the help of some of her very own guardian angels disguised as her friends and family to help her through this battle. She knows that she is not alone, but her overwhelming fear of how to provide for her family is proving to be a strong contender.

We are reaching out to her army of guardian angels to ask for help. If you are able to help her out financially in any way, even the smallest amount would mean the world to her. If you aren't in a position to be able to donate anything financially,  but are still looking for ways to help, even a friendly phone call or stopping by for a visit would be the difference between a good day and a bad day for her.
