Help Save Poppy

Donation protected
Meet Poppy. On July 13, 2017 my husband found her on the shoulder of a county road south of Stratford, Ontario, Canada. Poppy was severely injured and my husband knew he needed to act fast. He picked her up, placed her in a box with some clothing for padding and warmth, and immediately drove to the Humane Society. After being brought to the local Humane Society, they decided she needed to be seen immediately and took her to their emergency veterinarian. Though they gave her pain medication and examined her, they had to surrender the cat to a different Humane Society, which had jurisdiction over the area where the cat was found. After 24 hours, my husband and I learned Poppy was going to be euthanized because the Humane Society did not believe they could save her. Having three pets of our own and a very soft spot in our heart for animals, we were not willing to give up on such a precious life, so we took custody of Poppy and brought her to our vet in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

It was heartbreaking to hear that she might not walk again, and may have a spinal cord injury, a broken jaw, and more. That didn’t stop us from making the right decision to do everything we could to save her life.

The veterinarian from our clinic, Dr. Marco, was very optimistic so we have gained some hope. He is going to try to salvage all four legs, though there is a possibility of losing a leg and some toes. Dr. Marco is going to get a board certified surgeon to repair her fractured leg (hopefully this weekend) by repositioning the growth plate and adding pins to hold everything in place to heal. One of her paws is very damaged and they will try to save the whole paw. If not, they may have to remove two toes. Also, there is soft tissue exposed under the right part of her jaw and she currently cannot urinate. We are still not sure if it is a spinal cord issue from when she was injured. It will take some time until we learn for certain whether she will be able to urinate on her own or not. We have seen her every day and will continue to see her every day to support her.

Update July 15, 2017: The injury to her jaw was actually a 4 cm hole under her left jaw. The veterinarian informed us she underwent surgery July 14 to drain, disinfect and stitch the hole. We also learned that she is resting, stable and has been so incredibly happy despite her injuries. She purrs and is being the strongest she can be. We have absolute faith she will get better and go on to have an amazing life. This is what we love about animals: despite being injured and left on the side of the road, she doesn’t harbor any anger or hate, she only knows how to love.

Your donation will ensure Poppy receives the best care possible from highly trained veterinarians. A Board Certified Surgeon costs $1000 alone, and the bills are piling up quickly. As the issue evolves, there could be other costs and we are not in a strong enough financial position to cover everything without help from amazing supporters like you. Anything you can do to help is immensely appreciated. We will continue to update this page regularly with information about Poppy’s progression and prognosis and with pictures as she makes an amazing recovery.

At this point, we are unsure if we will take her into our family, or foster her before she can go to a loving home. If we do put Poppy up for adoption, there will be a rigorous process to ensure the candidate can adequately care for and love her. If she has a disability due to her injuries, my husband and I will likely adopt her ourselves to ensure she can receive the care she needs at all times and stages of her life.

We can’t do this without your help, and Poppy needs your help to become the strongest, most beautiful girl she can be. We welcome any questions.
