Sustainability Education Expedition

I am Associate Professor Tonia Gray from Western Sydney University and one of 75 women around the globe who have been selected to join a team of females in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine) to participate in the Homeward Bound initiative in 2018/2019. Please see (http://www.homewardboundprojects.com.au/)

What is Homeward Bound?

Two years ago, the world’s first all-female leadership expedition to Antarctica launched globally. Now Homeward Bound is synonymous with the engagement of women in science globally.

Homeward Bound is a 12-month leadership program which culminates in a three-week intensive voyage to Antarctica. The initiative, turned global movement, aims to heighten the influence and impact of women in science (STEMM), in order to impact policy and decision making as it shapes our planet.

The core mission of Homeward Bound is to elevate each participant’s leadership capabilities, to refine  our skills to design and execute strategy, build conviction to lead and galvanise a community for future collaborations as women working towards a sustainable future.

Why Women?

Globally, women, like myself are underrepresented in leadership positions and change has been incredibly slow, despite increasing dialogue and process/systems changes (19% executive roles in STEMM).

Women are emerging from university and college degrees as significant percentages of graduates and they take up a large percentage of our workforce. However, we are marginalized globally when it comes to executive decision-making roles.

By giving women, like myself, the leadership and strategic skills, a sound understanding of the science, and a strong purposefully developed network we will be able to impact policy and decisions towards a sustainable future.

Why me?

I am a multi-award winning educator with an enduring commitment to exemplary educational practice. In 2014, I received the prestigious 2014 Australian Award for University Teaching Excellence (AAUT) which demonstrates the constant improvement and enrichment practices which places me amongst the teaching, learning, and assessment elite of Higher Education.

In addition to this recognition, I have shaped the direction of Outdoor Education and Wellbeing at the international level.  My world-wide leadership of these twinned disciplines has earned senior authorships of two highly influential books on sustainability and women’s roles in outdoor education.

Your kind donation (however big or small) to my GoFundMe account will enable my involvement in the program and build a suite of educational resources for school teachers and children in the area of Sustainability Education and Climate Change.

My costs:

Participation in the Homeward Bound program comes at a significant cost. For transparency, you can see the cost break down here:  http://homewardboundprojects.com.au/about/governance/.

My request:

Based on the substantial costs, I am seeking both financial sponsorship/donations and merchandise to achieve our fundraising goals.

The total expense of Homeward Bound is approximately $21,000AUD per person ($16,000 USD), a significant proportion of which is already covered by in-kind contributions from the Dattner Grant partners in the program.  The remaining funds will be raised via a number of sources including:

-       Personal funds
·       Large scale fundraising events:  ticketed cocktail party and trivia nights
·       Small scale fundraising events around the university: bake sales, etc
·       Corporate sponsorship
·       Donations from philanthropic organisations e.g. Rotary clubs, Lions clubs etc.
·       Crowd funding through GoFundMe

Why Antarctica?

●      Regions of Antarctica are currently showing amongst the fastest responses to climate change seen anywhere on the planet.

●      The study of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, and their roles in the climate system, provides critical insights into global-scale change, and the influence of human activities on environmental change.

●      The continent is iconic as a wild, beautiful and unique environment that has captured the imagination of many leaders in the past.

By taking this journey together as a group of women in STEMM, we envision the experience will forge strong bonds, inspire action and lead to extraordinary collaborations between the group.

Thanks for considering co-funding the trip with me.

In deepest gratitude.
