Suspended in Misbelief: Burning Man 2022

"Suspended in Misbelief" is a new interactive art experience coming to Burning Man 2022!

Imagine coming across three wooden rectangular cubes in the vast expanse of a remote desert that tower twenty feet above the playa floor! From a distance, it looks as if the center rectangle is floating. Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that it is carefully balanced five feet off the ground between the outer two rectangles with high strength steel cables.

Each rectangle is a portal, representing the past, present and future. The 15' tall "PRESENT" portal will be elevated off the ground, supported by the other two portals, allowing for a unique view of the surrounding playa, serving as a reminder of the value of being fully "in" the present. This is also why the center rectangle will be reasonably larger than the two outer ones.

The portals will burn on Thursday night, providing an explosive finale when the center rectangle is released mid burn and crashes onto the playa floor. When it hits the ground it will shatter from the impact combined with the degradation from the flames.

About the Artists:

Many of the members that make up the Camp Babe Art Collective gather in the mountains of Colorado each summer working as outdoor educators and adventure guides. The lead artist for this project is Dan Zahn. This will be Dan’s eleventh burn and ninth art project brought to the playa.
