Susanne's Cancer treatment

Susanne’s Story

Susanne Martin Nobles’ story may sound like so many others that we’ve heard before; dedicated mother, wife, and exceptional teacher is struck down in the prime of her life with an unusual medical condition. Like many others, the strain of endless treatment isn’t entirely covered by insurance, and the financial burden is so overwhelming that losing everything they own isn’t the worst thing that can happen.
Before getting sick, Susanne was a dedicated teacher at Old Dock Elementary in southeastern NC. She was a well-respected member of the faculty, and all her students loved her. Unfortunately, Susanne started experiencing unexplained infections and overwhelming fatigue. After many visits to her primary care doctor and specialists, Susanne was diagnosed with Leukemia and forced to go on an extended medical leave that eventually resulted in her separation from Columbus County Schools.
Just as so many patients before her, Susanne soon found out that despite having insurance, she was unprepared to handle the mounting debt. While many may falsely believe that private insurance and later, disability, would cover the cost of cancer treatment, and medication, that wasn’t the case.
Medical Notes
Currently, the leukemia is thought to be in remission; however, further testing has discovered that a golf ball-sized Brain Tumor has attached itself to the top of her spine. Due to Susanne’s weakened state and the position of the tumor itself, no surgeon will attempt to remove it. With her compromised immune system, Susanne is constantly battling secondary infections that have begun to affect various organs.
The current treatment regimen consists of relatively new chemo treatments that has some pretty severe side effects. Susanne’s medical team hopes that her immune system will improve enough to allow the addition of radiation treatments to shrink the brain tumor. Each month her condition is monitored by blood screenings, MRI’s and other diagnostic testing. Unfortunately, due to her location and the complexity of her medical issues, Susanne and her family must travel to a larger metropolitan area for treatment. Expenses associated with travel, lodging and the out of pocket expenses of treatment have placed a huge burden on the Nobles’ family. After ten years, Susanne and her family have exhausted all their savings and are at their borrowing limit. Unable to continue paying for everything themselves, the Nobles’ family is about to lose their home in addition to everything else.
While Susanne and her family have been dealing with the ever-increasing financial and emotional burden of cancer, disaster struck. They have had to move out of their home due to the negligence of a contractor that had been hired to fix a leak that resulted in tremendous damage to the floors. Unfortunately, Susanne and her family have fallen through the floor that the contractor supposedly fixed. Because of their already difficult financial issues, the Nobles’ family has had to move out of their house despite having a mortgage.
Today, I am asking anyone who can to help Susanne and her family financially to save their home or help with medical expenses to do so. At this time, Susanne desperately needs $100,000 to keep from losing her home and to make necessary repairs as well as funds that will ensure she can continue to receive the essential medications each month to fight her illness.
Conclusion
While it may be easy to look at Susanne’s situation and say this family needs to file bankruptcy, stop fighting for their home and move to an apartment so they can concentrate on getting well, the fact of the matter is, Susanne has given up so much already, why should she do that again? Susanne’s lost her career as a teacher, her health, and by all accounts, her home. Can’t we come together as a community and help her in her time of need?
In closing, despite her needs being so high, Susanne and her family is appreciative of any amount of monetary help however, the greatest need for this family is an intercessory prayer. Before you consider donating anything, Suzanne requests that you first ask for healing and comfort in her time of need. Thank you, and God bless you.
