We wanted to provide an update on how Susan is doing: As of a week ago, Susan has completed 6 rounds of chemo treatment, and in a couple weeks she will have another CAT scan to check on the size of the tumor. Her doctors estimate that she will have a total of 8 rounds of chemo, which will keep her in Houston through the month of August. Once she returns home, however, she will still need to travel back to Houston frequently as her Sarcoma Team at MD Anderson will continue to monitor her for a long time after treatment. For this reason, we are raising our goal to $55,000, and with your help we can do it!!
Susan's treatment has been taxing on her body but not her spirit! She continues to be a fighter, and is determined to beat this. Update #3 - posted 4/30/18
It's been a few weeks since the last update, and I wanted to share some good news about Susan. After completing her third round of chemo, Susan's doctors did a CAT scan and were pleased to find that her tumor is shrinking slightly, which indicates that the treatments are working! This is promising news and certainly a step in the right direction.
Susan will likely remain in Houston through the summer as she continues to go through rounds of treatments. This past week, she underwent a fourth round, and will undergo 2-4 more rounds (so 6-8 total rounds when all is said and done), depending on how the tumor responds. Susan remains in high spirits and is looking forward to spending time with family and friends as they come to visit her in Houston. She is especially looking forward to spending Mother's day with her sons Adam and Greg, who will be flying in to be with her that weekend.
We are so close to our goal, and every dollar really does make a big difference. Thank you to all of those who have donated thus far - your generosity and show of love and support has been unbelieveable!!

Update #2 - posted 3/25/18
This past week was another challenging one - Susan was admitted to the hospital once again on Thursday due to complications from the chemotherapy. She is receiving amazing around-the-clock care from her team at MD Anderson, and hopes to be released in another day or two.
Although the chemo has taken a toll on her body, Susan's positive spirit and determination remains strong!! The messages of love and support from everyone mean the world to her, and your generosity has been incredible!
When we started this campaign, it was thought that Susan would undergo 3-4 rounds of chemo treatment over 9 weeks, but the doctors are now thinking 6 rounds will be needed, requiring her to stay in Houston/MD Anderson for much longer. For that reason, we are raising our goal to $40,000.

Many of you have asked how Susan is doing, so I wanted to provide an update:
After her first chemo infusion, it was a tough few weeks for Susan. She was twice admitted to the hospital with complications - once for pneumonia and a second time for an abscess on the tumor. Throughout this entire time, her sister Laura has stayed by her side, and she has had several visits from family and loved ones as well.
Yesterday was an especially long day, as she underwent the second infusion of chemo treatment at MD Anderson. The chemo has taken her hair, but she is as beautiful as ever and in good spirits. She is now back at Aishel House, her home away from home in Houston.
Susan has been truly touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support she has received from everyone. It warms her heart to read all your messages and words of encouragement, and she is staying strong!!

Anyone who has ever sought treatment for a serious medical condition, either personally or for a loved one, knows the toll that it can take on the whole family. It is physically, mentally, emotionally, and yes - financially draining.
Our dear friend and colleague Susan Harrison is currently going through this herself, as she undergoes intense chemotherapy treatment, followed by surgery to remove a large tumor that has been aggressively growing in her abdomen. Over the last 6 months she has done everything possible to find a cure, however, her journey from diagnosis to treatment has been anything but smooth, with several complications along the way.
After an initial chemo treatment in DC proved unsuccessful, Susan sought out a team of specialists at MD Anderson in Houston - one of only a handful specializing in this specific type of tumor, which by early February had nearly doubled in size to take up 2/3 of her abdomen. Given the severity of the tumor’s growth and its proximity to other organs, it could not be operated on - she would need to face an even more aggressive form of chemotherapy to shrink the tumor before it could be removed. And since her doctors wanted to keep a close eye on her, she temporarily relocated to Houston as she receives treatment over 9 weeks. Although she gets closer and closer every day, she still has a long way to go until full recovery.
To those who know Susan, her resilience, strength and positivity in the face of what has been a long and challenging ordeal is no surprise because she has always been a fighter. She is both an inspiration and a source of strength to everyone around her. To us, she is family. And right now she needs our help! That is why my colleagues and I decided to start this giving campaign - to raise at least $25,000 towards Susan’s medical costs. Every dollar raised will go towards easing the heavy financial burden of her treatment, surgery, and recovery. Please join us in achieving this goal!
