At the end of April, Susan was hospitalized for what she thought was complications from Crohn’s Disease. Instead, doctors discovered she had lymphoma. After a brief, but brave battle, Susan died on June 13, 2017 surrounded by love. She leaves behind 10 year old Cecilia.
It is all so sudden, unfair and completely devastating that Cecilia has lost her mother at such a young age. Susan was such a beautiful soul — she showered everyone around her with a level kindness and generosity that few will ever match. She always gave to others; her family, her friends, strangers - with the same exuberant passion that she approached life. She loved fiercely, genuinely cared about everyone and gave and gave and gave everything she had. As a teacher, she taught with an unparalleled sense of responsibility in order to give everything she could to every student she could reach.
Cecilia will continue to live with Susie’s mother, Gertie Frantzke. Aside from the pain of losing her own daughter, Gertie will now raise her granddaughter. This family faces a long road of healing and Cecilia will face many challenges in growing up without her devoted mother, but funding for her future should not be one of them. Education was a huge priority for Susan and, as her friend for many years, I know she’d be smiling if she knew of the kindness and generosity being showered on her beautiful daughter to secure her future.
Your contributions, no matter how big or small, will be a practical and meaningful way to remember, honour and leave a legacy to Susan, the mother, the teacher, the daughter and the friend.
