Hello! My name is Danny Lore, and I’m a queer black writer from New York City asking for support to help defray the costs of taking two weeks unpaid time off my day job in 2020 to attend major events related to my writing career.
I’m fortunate to have a burgeoning career in both prose and comics*. In 2019, Vault Comics published my first creator owned series QUEEN OF BAD DREAMS . I’ve been co-writer on JAMES BOND and QUARTER KILLER , and I’m about to co-write my first Marvel issues, IRONHEART 2020 . I’ve published several short stories in various venues, including the upcoming A PHOENIX FIRST MUST BURN , an anthology celebrating Black Girl Magic coming in in March from Viking Books.
I’m on the cusp of taking my writing to the next level — 2019 was the busiest year of my writing career and 2020 is shaping up to be even busier. However, the truth of being a freelance writer is there are often times of financial hardship, especially as you start to take on more and more work.
I have two great opportunities coming my way this year, both in March: Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle and the Texas Library Association (TLA) conference in Houston, Texas. These are critical steps in my career-- for networking, for promoting my work, and for learning from my peers.
The travel costs associated with attending these events are covered, but attending will mean taking unpaid time off from my day job for two weeks in one month. And while the trips are covered, nothing else is, including rent and bills.
Any sort of help right now is greatly appreciated. I am also reaching out to other people in my field to make up some of this difference via more work, but the life of a freelancer means nothing is guaranteed, and funds may not arrive until after rent is due. The earlier I can put all of this together, the less stressful the trips and returning to my regular work schedule afterward will be.
This GFM is intended to help me pay the following: Rent (approx 800 dollars for my portion), regular monthly bills like phone and electricity, and to have a small cushion in case of emergency while traveling.
