Surrogacy battle

Donation protected

Hi, my name is Melissa and my fiancé is David - we’re raising funds to help towards surrogacy costs. When I was 18 I was diagnosed with a condition called MRKH, which means I was born with ovaries but no womb or uterus to be able to get pregnant and carry our baby.

In April, we had our 2nd appointment at the Liverpool Women’s Hewitt Centre to hear the options available to us. Excited and nervous, we knew this was our first step to becoming parents. It was a tough appointment, a set back, my AMH (hormone) results were 2.7 - similar to a 45+ year old. This meant we would have to apply for IVF funding with the option to try to extract eggs from my low reserve, or to support us with donor egg costs. Of course we applied.

On 13th May I opened a letter, a panel of strangers had made a decision. We had been declined funding because of me, because I couldn’t carry our baby. The commission referred to surrogacy as “unethical” and refused to financially support us with any part of our journey, because the end result would undoubtedly have to lead to surrogacy.

This all feels so difficult to explain. We have a lot to be grateful for - we have each other, and we have a great support system. We’re constantly surrounded by our friends babies, the favourite “auntie” and “uncle”. The reality is you can feel full and also empty, happy and broken at the same time. We need help to continue our surrogacy journey.
