Surgical Expenses for Riggs' Spinal Surgery

Donation protected
Riggs is my vibrant and joyful soul-dog who loves going on adventures in the woods, chasing frisbees, and patrolling the neighborhood for squirrels. He loves to learn new tricks and walk to the park after I get home from work. He’s the best companion, and beloved by everybody who meets him.

On an ordinary day in July 2023, Riggs was jumping into the car to go for a ride when we misjudged the height of the back seat and missed the jump short. His back end landed on the edge of the seat, and he gave a yelp! He acted like he pulled a muscle and limped a little that night, but it wasn’t until a few days later I realized he was hurt more than he was letting on. His limp got worse, and after a week he wasn’t using his back right leg at all. We visited our primary care veterinarian who told us that Rigg’s herniated a disc in his back. By this time, the nerve damage was spreading over to both of Rigg’s rear legs, and his ability to walk was getting much worse. We have tried every conservative option available, but it is obvious that Riggs will need surgery to correct the herniation in his spine.

At this point in his journey, Rigg’s no longer has control of his bladder or rear legs. He is unable to walk on his own and requires diapers around the house. He is learning how to use a wheelchair, but this is a slow process. He has joint pain in his hips and is clearly uncomfortable most days even while lying and resting. The herniation is pressing on his spinal cord and sending pain throughout his body. He no longer gets to enjoy going on walks or leaving the house, because every step causes pain and discomfort.

We are scheduling an appointment with the neurologist, who will order x-rays and an MRI to locate the site of injury and formulate a plan for care. We are hoping that we aren’t too late, and surgical intervention can remedy the injury.

I am asking for donations to help cover the cost of the medical care needed to get Riggs back to his active and joyful self. I am asking for $10,000 to pay for the veterinary specialist needed to perform this spinal surgery. Throughout this process I will continue to update you all on where he is at. Riggs and I deeply appreciate any donations that you may be willing to give at this time.
