Many folks who have been associated with the ministry of Welcome Home Outreach in Vicente Guerrero, Baja Mexico, have become acquainted over the years with Maria Velez Cota who lives in the little town of Zapata just north of Vicente Guerrero. Our first work with Maria and her husband Epifanio was repairing/replacing the deteriorating roof of their house. Then, some six or seven years ago, Epifanio was diagnosed with cancer and we came alongside Maria as she cared for him until he passed away. In 2016, a group worked at her home to provide her first indoor bathroom.
In Mexico, there is no pension, social security or government assistance to draw on. Now widowed, Maria makes a meager living by doing domestic work – house cleaning, laundry, ironing and the like. When she gets work, she earns 200 pesos a day (about $10). For the past two years, Maria has had full care of her three grandchildren, ages 16, 11 and 9, so in addition to normal household expenses, there are expenses related to the children's schooling. The oldest, Arturo, is a hard worker and is able to work in local retail shops when his school schedule allows.
Maria has been suffering for quite some time with a medical condition that is growing increasingly problematic. Thankfully, cancer has been ruled out, but it now appears that she needs to have a hysterectomy, and has been told it will cost in the neighborhood of 30,000 pesos (approximately $1,500 US) for surgery by a private (non-government) physician. Our goal is to raise $3,000 to cover the surgery and give Maria a cushion for medications, transportation, and living expenses while she is unable to work.
Maria is a devoted Christian woman who knows what it means to trust God every day to provide for her and her grandchildren's needs. She works extremely hard every day (Try getting up every morning at 5:00 a.m. to make tortillas for your family, then walking to your job where you're on your feet all day!). She has a heart of thankfulness to God for His provision in her life. Now we have an opportunity to extend the hands of Christ in this season of need for Maria.
We are asking for your help in raising $3,000 for Maria's medical needs. Gracias y Dios les bendiga! Thank you and God bless you!
