Surgery for Manaiakalani

Donation protected

in Hawaiian legend, Manaiakalani is the name of the demigod Maui's fish hook, so it seems an appropriate name for a Maui cat with a fish hook stuck in her esophagus.    Manaia is a community cat I have been caring for since she was a kitten.  She is currently about a year old. She recently disappeared for over a week, returning emaciated and unwilling or unable to eat.  I brought her to the veterinarian and learned that she has a fish hook lodged in her esophagus.  Manaia foraged near the ocean,  so it was not entirely unexpected. She will need endoscopic surgery to remove the hook so she can eat normally again.  I am told there is only one person on Maui  who does this, and it will be expensive.  I am currently taking care of her with liquid food, and learning despite her shy nature and outdoor life, she is an extremely sweet and docile cat, and looking better already....but the hook must come out.  I am not supposed to have cats at my home, so I'm not sure what to do with her, but I know I will not put her back to starve, and will not euthanize such a sweet animal.  Whether at my home, or another, I will find her a safe place to live. I hate to ask for money in this climate, but any little bit will help.  I'm lucky that I can even consider doing this, but I don't know what the future will hold for my financial situation as this downturn goes on.

Thank you.
