Emergency Surgery for Len
Donation protected
This is Len, he is a young German shepherd who lives with his owners back of Bruce Mines. Len's family are new the area, a young couple who just bought a farm within the last two years.
On Wednesday August 26th, Len experienced a horrible accident where he was kicked by a horse and broke his leg. Len's owners didn't know what to do so they sought help from the neighbours nearby. After calling around and being refused by many veterinarians in Algoma, Len was seen by a doctor who says he would have to go to Espanola for surgery or be euthanized. Unfortunately this surgery is $4,500 + tax, which is unaffordable for the family, and the thought of euthanizing him did not feel like the most ethical choice. So Len returned home, and while he would experience a period of healing, the hope was that he would still be able to live a full life.
On Friday August 28th, animal protection officers showed up at the farm after Len's case was reported to them by the veterinarian clinic. These officers threatened Len's family with charges of animal abuse if he was not taken in for surgery, or euthanized. Two impossible choices given the financial circumstances of the family.
And so the options became clear: find the money to pay for the surgery, refuse and be charged, or let Len be euthanized.
As neighbours and community members in Algoma, we have put together this fundraiser in hopes of paying for the cost of Len's emergency surgery. We also hope that by sharing Len's story, we can raise awareness of the flaws within the animal protection protocols in Algoma, sparking discussion and reflection on how cases like this can be approached with more care and support for families in the future.
Any donation amount is appreciated as every dollar counts! We are very grateful for the generosity of community, especially during these difficult times.
Thank-you for your help,
