Surgery for Jelly Bean

This is Jelly Bean. She is a 12-year-old mini dachshund, and I just got her about two weeks ago. She is so sweet. She follows me everywhere, in her little toddling steps. She looooves being outside and will just sit and sniff the air. She’s calm and cool most of the time. When she’s scared she shivers, but a little gentle cuddling gives her courage.

I’ve had her two weeks and she has become a fixture already.

How did I get her? My friend is a doctor at a hospital in upstate NY. One of her patients went into hospice care, but before he would agree to be moved, he had to see to it that the Bean had a home.

My friend posted on Facebook. I posted on Facebook to try and help. But when I realized Bean was home alone all this time I said, oh just give me the dog. I’ll take her.

She has terrible breath and her teeth do not look good. She has two lumps under her hind legs that both my friend and I thought might be lipomas.

I brought her to the vet yesterday. She ended up staying the night to have surgery this morning. Her teeth and gums are in horrific shape and are causing her a great deal of pain. But worse, those two lumps are hernias, and one is holding her bladder, and the other is holding part of her intestines.

I wanted to die at the very thought. I can’t tell you how horrible it felt knowing she’d been like that for who knows how long.

So, despite really not having the money, I put down $500 yesterday for X-rays and bloodwork. Today I need to put down $1000 for the surgery. And then over the next few months I can pay off the remaining $1000. And this is with my vet (whom I adore) giving me a hefty discount on the surgery.

I have to do it and I have to do it now. I cannot let her spend one more day like that. It is unacceptable. It is impossible.
