Surf Scholarship in Memory of Tom

On May 24, 2017, Thomas (Tom) Moorefield of Wrightsville Beach passed away in his home. We whole-heartedly believe there isn't a person on this earth who met Tom and didn't walk away from him with a smile on their face and one more friend than they had before. His exuberance and liveliness resonated through anyone who had the great pleasure of knowing him. Tom had a huge personality, an even bigger sense of humor, and a heart like no other. He was kind, intelligent, loving, generous, thoughtful... the list is truly endless. He will be missed by so many.
If you knew Tom, you know he was more than passionate about his hobbies; one of those being surfing. The ocean was his life. His board was as much a part of his body as his legs. We take comfort in knowing how much joy and peace he found amongst the waves.
With this in mind, we are asking that in lieu of flowers or gifts, his friends and family make donations in his memory to the Surf City Surf School to support their charitable efforts. We feel Tom would be honored for his memory to live on through the lives of those who may be impacted by the swell in the same way he was.
Surf City Surf School (SCSS) on Topsail Island, born and building from the support of its community, attempts to return the favors right back to that wide and generous community. As the school has grown, spreading stoke and the joys of wave riding along the way, SCSS pursues individuals, organizations, schools—any human being or group—that could benefit from the ocean’s power, whether in challenge, reward or recess. With the help of friends, other area businesses and downright incredible folks, SCSS is able to provide scholarships to high school graduates, facilitate surf retreats for physically and mentally challenged individuals, and, among other avenues, dedicate surf lessons to an area youth shelter.
SCSS believes in these actions because of many reasons; but one, because we value this beautiful, widespread, coastal Carolina community, and two, because surfing is plain awesome and brings with it a positive, enlightening vibe and emotion.
No one knew that surfing sensation more than Tom Moorefield. SCSS wishes to extend contributions further into this community with Tom Moorefield at the forefront; partly in dedication and remembrance of a fine man, but mainly because we know Tom would want that very sensation shared with any individual who may not otherwise be presented with the opportunity.
Surf City Surf School just wants to help Tom continue to spread stoke, create smiles, and toss shakas. YEW!
As you may be aware, Go Fund Me charges a small processing fee from all donations. We want to be sure that 100% of your donation supports this cause. Tom's family will make a gift in the amount of the service charges to ensure this.
