Katie Rhea and Todd Kleinjan are veteran police officers in Lexington, Kentucky. Both have served their community honorably and faithfully in their different assignments. Katie worked as a patrol officer in addition to serving as a detective. Todd also served in patrol and has been an outstanding motor officer for over 12 years.
Katie and Todd began dating after many years of friendship and fell in love. they sharemany of the same interests and have pursued many endeavors outside of their professional lives. Katie's love of animals resulted in the purchase of a small farm that they now call home. This is where they care for their horses, dogs, cats and any other critter lucky enough to cross their pathes.
Because of their shared hobbies, love of animals and most importantly their undeniable love for each other, they decided to marry and complete one another.This new chapter in their lives was set to begin with their wedding in approximately 4 weeks.
On Wedenesday August 9, 2017, tragedy struck while on their farm. Katie and Todd were involved in an accident while driving the side by side ATV. Both Katie and Todd were ejected from the overturned ATV, suffering numerous injuries. Todd suffered bruises and contusion all over his body but was later treated and released from a local hospital. Katie's injuries were far more serious, suffering several facial fractures which required her to be transported to the trauma center via medical helicopter.
Katie is currently in intensive care with Todd by her side where she will remain for an extended period. Her severe injuries will require multiple surgeries, long term rehabilitation and major changes in her and Todd's lives. With their current situation, both will be away from their jobs for an extended period of time.
Both of their families, all of their friends and co-workers will remain faithful to Katie and Todd during this journey. Katies medical needs are extensive and will undoubtedly exceed an amount manageable by this youg couple. I am confident that Katie and Todd will ultimately prevail and overcome this terrible time in theirs lives with our support.
