We believe that no one can change the world but we can all do our best to have a positive impact to our local communities and that’s the best way to change the world.
Our story so far:
The café I was working at for years was forced to close in 2015 as rents tripled in Brixton. At the same time a new place that was offering cheap rents for local start-ups opened. I knew they were looking to have a skateshop in their premises and I felt that it had to be us running it instead of having a big chain, or someone else who doesnt represent the local scene.
My good friend Val joined me in that new venture, as I could not support the project by myself. Brixtons Baddest opened its doors two years ago and we have managed to successfully exceed our goals whilst simultaneously being able to give back to the community we tailored our business for. Brixtons Baddest is not just profit driven; we have hosted over 25 free parties and jams that have inspired and driven the local youth to skate and progress at an accelerating rate, whilst nurturing and providing a social platform for local beginners. On top of this we have become a hub for people to ask questions about skateboarding and we have supported campaigns that project our ethos. Long Live Southbank, Skatepal and Friends of Stockwell Skatepark are some of the campaigns we have been working with.
Sadly we were forced to leave our premises, as they were many external factors preventing us to do what we do in our best capability. We are ready to move on to a new premises closer to our beloved Stockwell Skatepark but we cannot cover our deposit. Being a young business and not yet profitable we are asked to cover a big ammount as a guarantee.
We have started this crowd funding to support our dream of running the Baddest skateshop, the only female owned skateshop, whilst still being able to keep providing for our community.
Other than organising regular open-for-all jams with free food, music, film screenings, drinks and donating skateboards, books and apparel to different causes from SkatePal to local schools we have tried to make political statements by doing sales like the “Gyaldem Sale ” to raise awareness about gender inequality.
