Shui Ziegler's Cancer Fund

OCA Pittsburgh treasurer and long-time benefactor, Shui Ziegler, has been battling serious health issues the last few years. She was diagnosed with an aggressive form of endometrial cancer in 2015, just 2 months after major back surgery, a critical time in the back recovery process. She underwent a full hysterectomy and radiation treatments, both external and internal. 2016 was a year of surgery recovery, many doctor appointments, and lots of physical therapy and aquatherapy; however, it is unlikely that she will regain her mobility and independence. Multiple doctors warned her that she would always experience some level of pain for the rest of her life.

Unfortunately in December of 2016, the cancer returned and metastasized in her lungs and abdomen. Due to Shui’s commitment to OCA Pittsburgh, she delayed the start of her chemotherapy treatments until after the Lunar New Year celebration on January 21 2017, since she was integral to the coordination of the annual event. She chose not to inform the OCA board of her cancer recurrence diagnosis because she knew the magnitude of work needed for a successful event was so great that it would likely be jeopardized if the board knew of her status and would most likely want her to ease her contribution.

Her chemo treatments have caused hair loss, severe bone pain, extreme fatigue, peripheral neuropathy, that has led to the need of a cane to minimize falling, and chronic gastrointestinal issues, among other side effects. And most importantly, she has been unable to work throughout this ordeal to generate any income to support her basic needs. Shui’s insurance has only covered a portion of all of her medical expenses, and she has to prepare for another round of chemotherapy. Her life savings have quickly been depleted, but her treatments are not yet finished. Her husband has been her loyal and loving caretaker, and even volunteers with her during OCA events.

Despite all of this, Shui remains a selfless volunteer and valued member of the OCA Pittsburgh Board of Directors. She continues to volunteer and participate in most, if not all, chapter and local Asian American events when she isn’t experiencing severe pain and fatigue. She also maintains her duties as treasurer and all her other roles in OCA Pittsburgh without fanfare or recognition.

Let’s pay it forward by supporting her in her time of need. Please consider making a donation, large or small, to help her with ongoing medical and life expenses. Shui Zeigler is truly an unsung hero and a luminescent leader!
