Rebekah is a lovely, kind, generous, sweet little princess of 8 years young. She is the daughter to Gary and Debra Dixon, and little sister to Andrew Dixon. Rebekah's story began to unfold in the fall of 2013, just after school had resumed. She had been playing during recess, excited to be back at school. When, after a few days, Rebekah began to complain of having pain in her right leg. Mommy and Daddy gave her Tylenol to see if that would offer her any relief- it did not. Time passed and Rebekah continued to complain of the nagging pain in her leg. When the home remedies failed to relieve her pain, they decided medical evaluation was necessary.
Rebekah visited an Orthopedic doctor who took an x-ray at the time of the first visit. Again, the cause of Rebekah's pain was believed to have been related to activity on the playground. When the doctor evaluated the x-ray, he could see no clear evidence of fracture. At that time, he could not see anything at all. His diagnosis was "stress or strain" and put Rebekah in a "boot" for a period of about 6 weeks. After that time, it seemed the pain was less, and much more intermittent until late 2013. Still, Rebekah was changing, and the people closest to her knew it, they just didn't know why.
Debra and Gary spent much time with Rebekah's teacher trying to understand what could be happening at school, and trying to inform the teacher of what was happening at home, in hopes that they could work together to understand why Rebekah was changing. Debra and Gary knew something was wrong.
On January 2, 2014, Rebekah visited the Orthopedic doctor once again, complaining of this same pain in her leg. Again, x-rays, and other diagnostic evaluations were performed. The doctor saw an abnormality in her bone structure and saw a tumor within the bone. He explained to Debra and Gary that he believed there was a possibility that Rebekah had Ewing's Sarcoma. He was 95% sure it was NOT Ewing's, but would refer them to an Oncologist to rule out the possibility.
At the end of January they met with the Oncologist who performed additional tests and extensive blood work. That blood work revealed the probability that Rebakah had either Leukemia, Rheumatoid Arthritis, or some other type of immune deficiency. More testing was required. On Thursday afternoon, February 27, 2014, Rebekah went to Cook's Children's Medical Center for a procedure: an extraction of the bone marrow, a spinal tap, and an evaluation of her lungs. Wow, such a tiny, little person undergoing so much!
They didn't expect to be notified so quickly of any diagnosis. At about 8PM, on Thursday night (the same day as the tests), Debra and Gary, and the rest of the family embarked on the worst nightmare of their collective lives. The doctor confirmed Rebekah has ALL Leukemia, Type B, which if there was such a thing, would be the "good" one to have. The survival rate is very high at around 95%- still there are risks.
