Our dear loved one, friend, wife, mother, daughter and spiritual sister Nina Millard is in the battle for her life against Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).
In the Middle of August, Nina discovered a rash on her abdomen. We didn't think much of it at the time, and it went away a few days later. Nina was also suffering from daily headaches when she got up in the morning. And ultimately a week of Flu like symptoms followed by two days of extreme fatigue ultimately requiring a trip to the Urgent Care on Sunday September 3rd. Upon arrival it was suspected that she had Pneumonia, but an X-Ray of her lungs revealed a crystal clear picture. The Urgent Care clinic wasn't able to get immediate results of a blood test, so they sent us to a hospital in Vancouver, WA to do blood work. The First test came back with her White Blood Count at 111,000 (Normal is in the 10,000 to 15,000 range). This concerned the Doctor because they had never seen a result this high, so he repeated the test to check it for accuracy. The 2nd Test drawn approximately 3 hours later showed her White Blood Count was now at 134,000. An Ambulance was immediately requested to take Nina to OHSU (Oregon Health Science University) because they are better able to treat Leukemia patients. When we finally arrived at OHSU, they did a a 3rd Blood Test. Her White Blood Count is now 160,000. Needless to say, Nina was admitted for further analysis of her condition. It was determined by the doctors that the only treatment available would be 2-3 Months worth of Blood Transfusions coupled with some intensive Chemotherapy for a 20%-30% chance of a successful outcome. As a Jehovah's Witness, Nina has a faith of "No Blood" products as such, the Blood Transfusions would go against her beliefs Acts 15: 29 The Chemotherapy would make her very sick, she'd lose her hair (including her perfect bangs). And in the end she'd have a low likelihood of a successful recovery. With that, the Doctors said she would have 72 Hours to maybe a week of life without their recommended treatment.
As you can imagine, this has been very shocking and hard on her, as well as her family and all of their friends. Nina and Guy have been together for 25+ years and married for 22 years, and their life revolves around their two children, Courtney and Taylor, whom they both adore. Nina is a very loving, kind, and giving person. She works as a school bus driver in Battle Ground, WA, and has made an impact on all students from kindergarten through high school. Nina is also a loyal sister in the Lewisville Park congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses in Battle Ground, WA. She has a very soft demeanor about her. A person that once you meet you fall in love with. She is a very gentle and kind person with a contagious laugh.
Nina's favorite color is purple, and below you will see a picture of her fellow bus drivers wearing purple sending their love from the Battle Ground bus yard. Wearing purple on Friday's has been a family tradition for the Millard family, and now that tradition will continue with her loving family, friends, and colleagues alike.
The family is shocked and bewildered and are spending all of their time, 24/7, with Nina and can use any assistance that we can give them.
