To be 8 and to have had to experience cancer and the countless treatments, transfusions, surgeries, pokes and sickness is bad enough. To have to go through it TWICE is unfathomable.
After almost three years Savannah was in remission! Her and her family were elated to be on the road to recovery. Every few months she had routine cat scans and mri's just to be sure.
This past Easter her routine check up sent her back for a more in depth look at a mass the doctors grew concerned about. Their worst nightmare had come true. Her cancer (Wilms tumor) was back. Grateful it was not attached to the only kidney she had left, they prepared for immediate surgery to have it removed.
Instead of finishing 2nd grade with her friends and kicking off summer as the rest of us are, she is several surgeries in and back to a regular schedule of radiation, chemo and daily medications. Being told to stay out of the sun and heat due to the intensity of the drugs she is on is not easy for an 8 year old who is trying to enjoy her summer vacation.
The tenacity and bravery that this child shows Is nothing short of amazing. She deserves a happy, healthy, normal life. She deserves to be a kid!
On top of all of emotional strain, the financial burden this takes on a family is incredible; Countless trips to Lurie Children's Hospital, expensive medications, parking, tolls. An endless stream of medical bills has forced her parents to switch off being with Savannah to accommodate work schedules, which has to be very difficult for either one to be away.
