About Grace D'Agostino:
On November 23, 2015, Grace D'Agostino, a lifelong resident of East Boston and retiree of the Boston Police Department, suffered a devastating fire at her 3-family home at 217 Lexington Street which left her with only the clothes on her back.
Grace has lived at 217 Lexington Street since she was a little girl, and she lost all her belongings, family heirlooms and treasures. For five months, Grace lived in hotels until an apartment at her daughter's house next door finally became available. In the early spring of 2016, a contractor was hired to begin the renovations to Grace's home. By 2017, the contractor had received 50% of Grace's insurance money but had only performed 10% of the work. To make matters worse, Grace's mortgage was sold to a new mortgage company that is now holding the balance of her insurance money, which caused more unexpected delays.
Although Grace has now hired a reputable contractor, there is only 50% of her insurance money left to complete 90% of the restoration. In addition, because she lost everything, she needs to replace furniture, appliances and personal property as well. For 2 1/2 years, Grace has been displaced from her home and has had no rental income that she used to rely on to offset her small pension that barely covers her taxes, food, heat and electricity.
It's time to come together as a community and help Grace, one of our seniors who has lived, worked and raised a family in East Boston her entire life. Can we count on your help?
