<div><strong>The realities of many refugees</strong>

<div>A year ago, 20-year-old Alice had to flee the Democratic Republic of Congo with her daughter because of the raging wars there. She came to Uganda as a refugee to escape conflict and find a new life for herself and her child. She tells us that she still does not know where her parents are.

<div>To get by, Alice survives by farming the small plot of land she received but still needs the support of food hand-outs otherwise, she would not have enough food nor money for herself and her daughter. Additionally, she describes the farm work as incredibly hard and tiresome, as she has to do almost everything manually and only has a hoe to help her. She would love to work in a different field but no other livelihoods are available.

<div>Alice’s challenges are not an isolated case. Of the over 32 million<strong> refugees globally, many often only receive bare necessities like food and shelter.</strong> They rarely have the chance to be self-sufficient as they are often in an endless aid dependency cycle. Uganda is at the forefront of driving self-reliance for refugees, mainly through farming. However, farmers like Alice still do<strong> not have adequate means to be self-reliant,</strong> meaning they depend on food and cash hand-outs. On top of that, they face food security issues as they lack the tools, knowledge and infrastructure to drive more sustainable and efficient processes while missing access to concrete livelihoods.

<div><strong>Our Approach</strong>
</div>
<div>We at Team Spirit see the <strong>necessity and urgency to reimage the economic inclusion of refugees</strong> so everyone can thrive not only survive. With the steadily increasing migrations due to climate change and political conflicts, it’s imperative that we change our systems from within and amplify voices and opportunities on the ground. At Team Spirit, <strong>we create self-reliant livelihoods </strong>by enhancing agricultural supply chains and providing vocational training.

<div><strong>It’s time for impact on the ground</strong>
</div>
<div>After refining our solution through interviews such as with Alice and research, we are <strong>now ready to launch our pilot program in Uganda</strong> from February 13 to 17, 2023, with our local partner, Tomorrow Vijana. Refugees can participate in a <strong>week-long agroecological and business training that increases food security</strong> by augmenting the efficiency of agricultural processes through the provision of tools, know-how in regenerative agriculture and farm management <strong>while fostering self-reliance </strong>through business training and economic opportunities.

<div><strong>That’s where YOU come in.</strong> We are currently fundraising to deliver the most effective program for the most amount of people possible.

<div>This money will enable us to:
</div>
<ul>
<li>Curate and deliver lectures and hands-on training for a week (13 - 18 February 2023) on business and agroecology each day;
</li>
<li>Continue to hold office hours and additional weekly lectures for the next weeks to ensure sustainable learning;
</li>
<li>Provide stipends for the participants of the program so they are able to be part of the program;
</li>
<li>Supply some of the first tools for each refugee e.g. including a machete and hoe;
</li>
<li>Give stipends to potential refugee entrepreneurs;
</li>
<li>Conduct research (surveys, focus groups and interviews) with the refugees in the settlement to ensure knowledge transfer and further need-finding;
</li>
<li>Cover part of our travel expenses;
</li>
<li>Developing a new curriculum after cultivation and harvesting for the next steps in the value chain, namely processing and storage.

<div>Our program is an opportunity for <strong>refugees to change their living standards in the long run toward a sustainable, self-reliant and prosperous future.</strong>

<div><strong>What we have done so far</strong>
</div>
<div>Our founder, Chantal Braunwalder, recognized the need to change how refugees are integrated into society because she had worked with refugees in the past and studied their challenges resulting from global inequalities and climate change. Thus, she geared her exchange year at Harvard University to learn how to create lasting solutions, which resulted in Team Spirit. After finding a team that shares the same vision, researching the problems of refugees in more depth and finding Uganda as a fruitful ground for change, Team Spirit was accepted to the Harvard Innovation Labs - an incubator program - in January 2022. To hone our solution, we have <strong>conducted over 30 expert interviews</strong> and with another local partner, Unleashed, validated our <strong>demand through interviews with refugees</strong>. It has been our privilege to be awarded <strong>two stipends from Harvard programs, </strong>but with your contribution, we are able to run our program fully.

<div>Vor einem Jahr musste die 20-jährige Alice mit ihrer Tochter aus der Demokratischen Republik Kongo fliehen, weil dort die Kriege tobten. Sie kam als Flüchtling nach Uganda, um dem Konflikt zu entkommen und ein neues Leben für sich und ihr Kind zu finden. Sie erzählt uns jedoch, dass sie immer noch nicht weiß, wo ihre Eltern sind.

<div>Um über die Runden zu kommen, bewirtschaftet Alice das kleine Stück Land, das sie erhalten hat, ist aber immer noch auf aussenstehende Geld-und Lebensmittelunterstützung angewiesen, da sie sonst weder genug zu essen noch Geld für sich und ihre Tochter hätte. Außerdem beschreibt sie die Arbeit auf dem Feld als unglaublich hart und ermüdend, da sie fast alles von Hand machen muss und nur eine Hacke zur Verfügung hat. Sie würde gerne in einem anderen Bereich arbeiten, aber es gibt keine anderen Möglichkeiten, ihren Lebensunterhalt zu bestreiten.

<div>Alice' Herausforderungen sind kein Einzelfall. Von den über <strong>32 Millionen Flüchtlingen weltweit erhalten viele nur das Nötigste wie Nahrung und Unterkunft</strong>. Sie haben kaum die Möglichkeit, sich selbst zu versorgen, da sie oft in einem endlosen Kreislauf der Abhängigkeit von Hilfe stecken. Uganda ist Vorreiter bei der Förderung der Eigenständigkeit von Flüchtlingen, vor allem durch die Landwirtschaft. Landwirte wie Alice haben jedoch immer noch <strong>keine ausreichenden Mittel, um sich selbst zu versorgen</strong>, das heisst sie sind auf Lebensmittel und Bargeld angewiesen. Darüber hinaus sind sie mit Problemen der Ernährungssicherheit konfrontiert, da ihnen die Werkzeuge, das Wissen und die Infrastruktur fehlen, um nachhaltigere und effizientere Prozesse zu betreiben, und sie keinen Zugang zu konkreten Lebensgrundlagen haben.

<div><strong>Unser Ansatz</strong>
</div>
<div>Wir von Team Spirit sehen die <strong>Notwendigkeit und Dringlichkeit, die wirtschaftliche Eingliederung von Flüchtlingen neu zu gestalten, </strong>so dass jeder von ihnen florieren kann und nicht nur überlebt. Angesichts der stetig zunehmenden Migrationsbewegungen aufgrund des Klimawandels und politischer Konflikte ist es unerlässlich, dass wir unsere Systeme von innen heraus verändern und den Stimmen und Möglichkeiten vor Ort mehr Gewicht verleihen. <strong>Bei Team Spirit schaffen wir</strong> durch die Verbesserung der landwirtschaftlichen Versorgungsketten und die Bereitstellung von Berufsausbildungen <strong>eigenständige Existenzgrundlagen.</strong>

<div><strong>Es ist an der Zeit, vor Ort etwas zu bewirken</strong>
</div>
<div>Nach der Verfeinerung unserer Lösung durch Interviews wie mit Alice und Recherchen sind wir nun bereit, unser Pilotprogramm in Uganda im Februar 2023 mit unserem lokalen Partner Tomorrow Vijana zu starten. <strong>Flüchtlinge können an einer einwöchigen agrarökologischen und betriebswirtschaftlichen Schulung teilnehmen</strong>, die die Ernährungssicherheit erhöht, indem sie die Effizienz der landwirtschaftlichen Prozesse durch die Bereitstellung von Werkzeugen und Know-how in regenerativer Landwirtschaft und Betriebsführung steigert und gleichzeitig die Selbstständigkeit durch betriebswirtschaftliche Schulungen und wirtschaftliche Möglichkeiten stärkt.

<div><strong>Und hier kommen Sie ins Spiel</strong>. Derzeit sammeln wir Spenden, um ein möglichst effektives Programm für möglichst viele Menschen durchführen zu können.

<div>Was wir mit dieser Kampagne ermöglichen könnten:
</div>

<li>Eine Woche lang (13. - 18. Februar 2023) täglich Vorträge und praktische Schulungen zu den Themen Wirtschaft und Agrarökologie zu organisieren und durchzuführen;
</li>
<li>In den nächsten Wochen weiterhin Sprechstunden und zusätzliche wöchentliche Vorträge abzuhalten, um nachhaltiges Lernen zu gewährleisten;
</li>
<li>Bereitstellung von Stipendien für die Teilnehmer des Programms, damit sie an dem Programm teilnehmen können;
</li>
<li>Bereitstellung einiger der ersten Werkzeuge für jeden Flüchtling, z. B. eine Machete und eine Hacke;
</li>
<li>Vergabe von Stipendien an potenzielle Unternehmer;
</li>
<li>Durchführung von Forschung (Umfragen, Fokusgruppen und Interviews) mit den Flüchtlingen in der Siedlung, um den Wissenstransfer und die weitere Bedarfsermittlung zu gewährleisten;
</li>
<li>Übernahme eines Teils unserer Reisekosten;
</li>
<li>Entwicklung eines neuen Lehrplans nach Anbau und Ernte für die nächsten Schritte in der Wertschöpfungskette, nämlich Verarbeitung und Lagerung.

<div>Unser Programm bietet den Flüchtlingen <strong>die Möglichkeit, ihren Lebensstandard langfristig in Richtung einer nachhaltigen, selbstbestimmten und wohlhabenden Zukunft zu verändern.</strong>

<div><strong>Was wir bisher getan haben</strong>
</div>
<div>Unsere Gründerin, Chantal Braunwalder, erkannte die Bedingung, die Integration von Flüchtlingen in die Gesellschaft zu verändern, da sie in der Vergangenheit mit Flüchtlingen gearbeitet und sich mit deren Herausforderungen beschäftigt hatte, die sich aus den globalen Ungleichheiten und dem Klimawandel ergeben. Sie nutzte ihr Austauschjahr an der Harvard University, um zu lernen, wie man dauerhafte Lösungen schaffen kann, und so entstand Team Spirit. Nachdem sie ein Team gefunden hatte, das dieselbe Vision verfolgte, die Probleme von Flüchtlingen eingehender untersuchte und Uganda als fruchtbaren Boden für Veränderungen entdeckte, wurde Team Spirit im Januar 2022 in die Harvard Innovation Labs - ein Inkubatorprogramm - aufgenommen.
