Big hopes for Mikey! We have recently found out about a program that will help Mikey to communicate called Spell2Communicate. It’s a program that will teach him how to spell out his words on a spelling board. We have always been told that he functions on a level of a 5-6 year old but I have always felt like there was more. This exceptional program informs us that our autistic folks have ALWAYS had the cognitive ability just not the motor ability. I have made arrangements for him to have an intensive 2 day session in Knoxville Tennessee. They will also train me on how to work with him while here at home. Each session is around $120 and he will have 4 in the 2 days we are there. Then going forward we will have monthly sessions. We will of course have to spend a couple night there so with the hotel cost and food, it all adds up quickly. Mikey is already on a very tight fixed income and he hasn’t had a roommate in months to help split expenses in his home. So I have been helping to supplement where needed. This program is something that I HAVE to try for him to give him a voice. The success rate is amazing and I just recently was able to talk with a guy who is now an open speller who went thru this program. I just wept when he spoke to me thru his board at the man he is now because of this opportunity that was given to him. In his words..’Michael, you can absolutely do S2C. I believe in you. You’re words are valuable and we want to hear them.’ If you can’t help financially, I ask that above all that you pray for us as we travel down this road to hear what Mikey has wanted to say for 34 years but hasn’t been able to say.
