Just Another Pilgrim, Kinda’
Hi! My name is Gabriel. I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, spastic diplegia to be exact, when just 18 days old. The right side of my body is affected most; because of it, I cannot walk without assistance and have difficulty speaking clearly. In spite of all this, my dream is to travel 500 miles across Spain on the Camino de Santiago, but I need your help.
For most of my life I’ve had to meet the challenges of CP without my father. Dad traveled the world, providing people in all kinds of situations with clean water. He even set up purification systems for the White House and the International Space Station! Truly, he was a great man, and I still miss him very much. I believe his spirit of adventure and his drive to help others lives on in me.
I’m Doing the Camino!
Three summers ago I watched a documentary on the Camino de Santiago, the ancient pilgrimage route across Spain. A teacher of mine had told me stories about his experiences on the Camino, but watching that documentary with my family inspired me! I had to go, no matter what.
I could hardly contain my enthusiasm, and when I saw him walking down the hall one day as I was leaving Latin Camp (that’s right, Latin Camp) at school, I literally burst through the door and announced my intentions. I knew I couldn’t do it myself, but somehow I did know that if I told him about my dream, he would do all he could to make it happen! And it happened!
With a lot of planning, the energy of many pushers and pullers, and the generous financial support of so many friends and family, we have completed the first two hundred miles of the 500 mile pilgrimage. I will never be able to thank them enough.
We’re Not Done Yet...
But, we’re not done yet! We have 300 miles to go. We plan to return this summer for the next 120 miles. And we need your help!
There is so much that goes into making this pilgrimage possible. Besides pushers and pullers, we need to cover the expenses of a medical assistant, personal helpers, and a support van to handle my extra equipment and any emergencies.
We need to raise $8,000 by June, 2021 to continue this amazing journey.
My dad’s legacy is the driving force behind my desire to complete all 500 miles of the Camino, and one day through this experience, I hope to help other pilgrims with disabilities discover just how accessible and life-changing the Camino de Santiago can be.
