Supporting Educational Equity & Opportunity in DR

My name is Gregory Castro. As an educator for the NYC Department of Education for the past nine years, I have been fortunate enough to have the necessary materials and resources available to support my students, their learning, and overall success. In 2019, I went back home to the Dominican Republic and was shocked at the conditions in which teachers and students are expected to teach and learn. Classrooms are overcrowded, facilities unkept, and curricular resources outdated. Most students and their families are financially unable to gather the basic, necessary school supplies they need to have a shot at equitable educational opportunities.

I firmly believe everyone should have access to meaningful educational experiences, regardless of where they are. I also think it is in our power to aid and support the development of quality education for all. We might not be able to change the politics behind educational funding in another country, but we can share a sprinkle of hope with students who want to learn and are in need.

Como educador del Departamento de Educación de la Ciudad de Nueva York durante los últimos nueve años, he tenido la suerte de contar con los materiales y recursos necesarios para apoyar a mis estudiantes, su aprendizaje y el éxito general. En 2019, regresé a mi hogar en la República Dominicana y me sorprendieron las condiciones en las que se espera que los maestros y estudiantes enseñen y aprendan. Las aulas están abarrotadas, las instalaciones descuidadas y los recursos curriculares obsoletos. La mayoría de los estudiantes y sus familias son financieramente incapaces de reunir los útiles escolares básicos necesarios para tener oportunidades educativas equitativas.

Creo firmemente que todos deberían tener acceso a experiencias educativas significativas, sin importar dónde se encuentren. También creo que está en nuestro poder ayudar y apoyar el desarrollo de una educación de calidad para todos. Es posible que no podamos cambiar la política detrás de la financiación de la educación en otro país, pero podemos compartir una pizca de esperanza con los estudiantes que quieren aprender y lo necesitan.
