Supporting Carly Flook

At Christmas carly found herself starting to feel really unwell. She was feeling constantly tired and suffering with low moods, doctors put it down to depression. She was off work for over two months, finding it hard to return. Two weeks into her return to work, she discovered a rash and unexplained bruises. She was sent immediately to the hospital where they told her they believed it to be leukaemia. Following some blood tests she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia and admitted to the Heath hospital where she stayed for 10 days. She was also diagnosed with neutropenia. She then started 10 days of intense chemotherapy a week later.

This has changed Carly’s life and has hit her family hard. Life will never be the same for Carly as she has also been told that she may never be able to drive again and she will also always have to take great care within certain environments as her immune system is almost non existent. She has had to take so much time off work before her diagnosis that she has now run out of sick pay and her partner has also had to take time off to support her through her chemotherapy making the 35 mile round trip for daily visits back and forth the hospital.

For those of you who are lucky enough to know carly personally, will know she has the kindest of hearts and is always supporting and helping others out, especially those in need. And so we want to be able to do this for her as we believe no one deserves our support more than she does. What most of you won’t be aware of is Carly’s journey. Carly was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries at a young age, making it extremely difficult for her and her partner to have children of their own but this has never stopped her love of children especially her niece and nephew. So it was of no surprise to us that, when her niece was taken into care carly did everything she could and fought through the courts for special guardianship. She and her partner were granted custody in July 2018 and took lexxi on as her own. After several visits from social services, even after her diagnosis, they still say carly and her family are not a priority and are not over crowded living in their one bedroom flat. It is because of this that we feel we have to take matters into our own hands and have set up this fund to financially support Carly and nick to be able to move house to improve their quality of life at home during what is already a difficult time for them.
