Supporting Bea

Donation protected
After a great deal of deliberation, I have set up this crowd funding campaign in support of my eldest daughter Bea, who has been struggling with severely debilitating mental health problems for a very long time.

A few years ago she was diagnosed with a mental health condition known as Borderline Personality Disorder which creates extreme challenges for the sufferer to regulate their internal emotional world, see,  rethink.org, mind.org

Bea has been in some very dark places and more recently has had two hospital admissions to a psychiatric unit with psychosis.  These episodes have completely damaged her confidence that she can live an ordinary life as her relationships have become increasingly strained by the challenging behaviours that people with this condition display.

Medication can only go so far to treat the range of depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts that accompany this issue.  The most effective long term treatment is psychotherapy with a knowledgeable therapist.

Those that know me well, know how involved I have been in supporting Bea, whilst divorcing and retraining to be a midwife.  The pay for newly qualified midwives is staggeringly low, and as a single parent, I am not in a position to financially cover the cost of Bea's psychotherapy alone.

Even though Bea's condition is preventing her from leading a fulfilling life at present, the NHS does not provide ongoing therapy for a person in her situation.  The most they offer is medication and an 8 week mentalisation course to help those affected by BPD to learn to regulate their emotions.

It is awkward and exposing to ask for help in this way, especially as the stigma of mental health problems is very real, especially for the sufferer, but also for the immediate family.  Not a day goes by without me wishing or hoping things could be better for my child.

The money raised will be directly spent on ongoing therapy to assist Bea to live more comfortably with herself and in time, I hope she will be able to reach her potential to be the beautiful human she is capable of being.
