Supporting a Trauma Affected Community in Liberia

Hi everyone, My name is Frances Swaray and I am an unpaid volunteer with The Koinonia Trust Inc. (Liberia). I have a BSc in Health Science and Physiology and BSc (Hons) in Health promotion and Public Health from Sligo institute of Technology and I also have a Masters in Social and Community Development from Queens University in Belfast. The overall vision of The Koinonia Trust is to support the healing and rehabilitation of people who have experienced trauma and brokenness. They do this through different methods that can nurture new hope in the lives of the people they work with. 1. They facilitate Trauma Healing Groups for both adults and children providing a safe space for people to work through their heart wounds. They also identify local people to train as apprentice facilitators who can then facilitate trauma healing groups in their own community. 2. They facilitate a homework, study and reading group for local children. This contributes to not only their learning but supports them to stay in school. 3. They work with local leaders, communities and non-governmental organisations (NGO's) by providing various types of training requested. When I travel to Liberia I live and volunteer in the local community in Upper Caldwell, Monrovia and I am based in the Trust compound. I do this several times a year. I next plan to return to Liberia in January 2020 and this will be my fifth year as a volunteer. It is only through God's grace, the generosity of friends and financial supporters that allows me to keep going back to Liberia to do this valuable work. The associated costs of being able to do each block trip are in the region of 4,770 which breaks down as follows: 2,540 - Return flights, airport transfers and in-transit accommodation 600 - Travel & Health Insurance 230 - Legal Permits 1,400 - Food, water, transport, communication, access to electricity, medicine Your support helps me to go to Liberia to empower and encourage the team that works within the local community. It also helps me to facilitate Trauma Healing Groups and train apprentice facilitators in Trauma Healing which enables the program to reach many more. I am there to provide additional pastoral care for anyone who needs support as they go through the program and in addition I am able to provide training for the graduates that are responsible for the homework club. I also support our local clinic staff by providing training for them in health promotion . I an involved in developing workshops for other organisations and co-facilitate them with The Koinonia Trust team. This opportunity to volunteer marries my calling with the skills, abilities and life experience God has given me. A deep thank you for your generosity. Frances
